Hi all, I’m spending these winter months giving my 2015 Multistrada a good deep clean. Everything has been going well and the bike is looking pretty fresh, until I got to the rear end and began the struggle to undo the rear wheel nut and the the sprocket nut. I recently had the full Desmo service done complete with a new set of tyres so I hoped the nuts would be relatively easy to undo. I bought the Ducati socket and tried just using a ratchet handle and a now bent extension bar! I’ve since bought an impact driver but neither nut will budge. Anyone got any hints or is there anyone in the SW (Swindon) who can help?
Had to use a scaffold pole on a power bar to get mine undone ( 2015 DVT ) I’m sure the torque setting is around 220 nm
An impact driver won’t budge it? That is tight! The first time I used the electric gun, I had to keep it on for a while. I thought it would never move but finally did. I don’t have a torque wrench that goes to 220nm, so just just give it approximately the ‘full bastard’, put the circlip back on and cable tie the ends together. I don’t think it’s going anywhere.
An impact driver should certainly undo it, maybe you have to persist a bit longer. Can you heat the nut? That may help. The dealer would have used an impact gun, probably pneumatic, to tighten it so maybe a trip to see him and loosen the nut so you can get it off when you get home. Or any other tyre shop nearby.
It’s a torque setting of 230nm so it’s proper FT, a good powerful impact gun will get it off, some on here have used a Clarke 240v impact gun I think that got it off, or other strong powerful ones are available, make sure you torque it back up to the correct torque though with a torque wrench that goes up to 230nm
Impact wrenches come in differing powers. Some are only good for c150Nm for example. You need a good wrench. Clarke or Clarke copy mains (not battery) is a good choice and common amongst forum members. That will wizz it off no worries.
As a tip for re-tightening the nut, make a paint mark on the nut and the spindle before you undo it. Not many of us have a torque wrench capable of 230nm, so the paint mark can substitute.
3/4 inch drive adapter, big f off bar and even a scaff bar over the end. A friend to hold the bike, jump on the bar, it'll move....eventually.
I once saw two guys go at my old Twin Spark with a windy gun they used on Trucks all day and it wouldn’t budge….until they took it off the centre stand and had someone sit on it and apply the rear brake. Any kind of give saps the torque out of whatever forces you are applying. I have the DVT now and as Jack says the Clarke torque wrench (not driver) does the job as soon as the back wheel is weighted, can even do this all by myself now with some patent-pending self taught yoga moves.
Thanks everyone for all your tips, seems a heat gun, breaker bar and a hefty extension is next on the shopping list! Turning out to be quite expensive satisfying this cleaning itch. Next part is the rusty exhaust down pipes and collector box, has anyone coated/painted these?
Before I got a rattle gun, I went down the local tyre shop and got him to loosen it with his Snap on gun. Wouldn't even take a drink for doing it.
bought one of these a while ago and never had a problem since https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cew1000-electric-impact-wrench/
If using an impact gun you need an impact resistant socket, which is beefy and heavy. If you use a 'normal' socket it is likely to crack.
I was hoping mine would be relatively loose as I’ve just had tyres replaced I’ve since stripped my bike down (all plastics off, front wheel off, exhaust off etc). I’ve been spraying with WD40 the last few days see if that helps before I give the rattle gun another go. I bought the specific Ducati tool.
