Hello everyone. I believe this has been discussed over and over again but I was wondering if anyone is in the same situation as me. Living in Spain usually I ride in hotter and much dryer climate than I have ridden before when living in Ireland. Before, back in Ireland I was on the Michelin Road 5 and thats what I have now as well but it seems that the abrasive asphalt and the weather/not humidity have prompted the lifetime of the tyres decline dramatically. Im attaching a picture after 6.000 km (not sure why and how that crack appeared). Is anyone driving in the same conditions and If you do, would you recommend some other tyre? I am usually riding a bit sporty and in the twisties combined with long trips around Europe (usually at least 1-2 trips a year). Any suggestions would be welcome. Cheers, Andrei
I used a set on my 1250 gs in Spain on a trip . Bikes were shipped to Barcelona then we did a 7 day mountain trip . They lasted 1500 miles as the heat , grippy roads and the fact the roads were awesome and spirited riding they performed well but just did not last . Not on a 1260 but I think they are good but I’d your a bit hard on the throttle they fail. Just my opinion. I did try the 01 but found then a bit squirmy under braking , but this could be due to the GS as not used on a Multi , but given what I felt I would not use them IMHO of course. Looking forward to the Rosso on the PP v4 mind
Thats my problem as well. In Ireland the Road 5 were amazing...I managed around 15.000 on one set without any issues. Here its very different. Because the tyre is really soft it offers good grip but the heat and the roads make them more of a racing tyre rather than touring. I would like something more hard to get more miles out of them in these conditions.
Little bit off topic, but I read somewhere that rear Michelin Road 5 is rubbing the chain on Multi 1260. I am about to switch from Scorpions to either Michelin Road 5 or Metz Roadtec 01 SE, but cannot decide which way to go... Have you had any issues with Road 5 and chain rubbing?
Looking at that photo it looks like your existing rear has quite a bit of life in it yet. I would expect a split to be in a straight line rather than jagged like that, are you sure it's not a cut from something on the road? Of course a photo can't tell the full story. Have toured on Michelins in the main, Roatechs once but didn't get on with them. My 1260 has always been shod with Road5s and about half my annual mileage is touring, usually to Spain, Portugal, Italy , Sth France etc. and whilst wear might increase a little in the warmer climates try riding in Scotland and you'll find that tyre wear is an issue in the Highlands due solely to the road surface.
Has anyone here tried Pirelli Angel GT II? According to some reviews and tests, they should outperform Michelin Road 5...
Another member on here (attn, @kartman) that I know and trust his opinion rates them over the Road5s, might well be tempted to try them out myself at the next change.
I have on the bike from my avatar. The 1200 DVT. For me the MR5 were an upgrade especially in the wet. I know the person who has the bike now (same guy I sold it too) is on his second set and he likes them a lot. Thats very true. I just noticed it the other day. Thread seems to be OK and the depth is really good as well but I noticed some slipping and sliding lately on the twisties. I know, its colder outside but last weekend we had around 18 celcius on my ride and I felt the back a bit un-settled. I am the same, mostly touring in Spain, France, Italy (and a few rides to colder climates). Would love to see the Scottish Highlands as I heard they are amazing. The only similar rides I did was the wild Atlantic way in Ireland and the MR5 performed flawlessly. Maybe its just be and I know I cant have both endurance and stickyness on a tyre but I was wondering if anyone else rides in the same conditions I do on a pair of MR5. Thanks all for the feedback! I might try these Pirellis then… I ride in the whet only when rain catches me… And I am looking for more sport oriented tire for dry conditions…
If you ride in the wet try the Metzeler 01’s. Made for touring, variable weather and apparently good mileage too. You’ll find the bike turns quicker than with the Michelin’s.
These look interesting but seem to be aimed at the sports rider who wants a bit more mileage from their tyres. Unlikely to come that close to sports touring tyres in that regard, right? What sort of longevity can you realistically expect?
You read my mind. They look really good but I'm very interested on the mileage. Anyone can help us out with some numbers?
