Multistrada Tyre Sizes

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by garyl, Mar 17, 2018.

  1. Hi all. Fortunately I haven't had to ask for any advice for a while as(I hardly dare utter the words) my multi seems to have been running ok lately. I have seen many questions on here about tyre sizes, but I cant seem to find the answer to mine. As with many multi riders I sometimes experience a slight weaving at reasonably high speeds and also when accelerating on a bend. I have had the suspension set up to match my weight and this improved it massively.( The handling not my weight). I am wondering what putting a 190/50 rear tyre on would do to the handling. Pros and cons.? cheers Gary

  2. Smaller rolling radius so higher revs for the same speed. I tried the same size ages ago but cannot remember if I noticed any difference. My advice would be to play with your pressures or try a different tyre. I have run Metzelers for the last 15 or 16 thousand miles, both M7RR and lately Roadtech 01s and have never experienced weaving at speed or under acceleration out of a bend. Andy

  3. I have roadsmart3s on at the minute and had PR4s on before that. I cant remember if I had a similar problem when I had the PR4s on. Now that you have mentioned trying a different tyre it has made me think about the profile of the roadsmarts. Their big selling point is that they make the bike turn in much quicker ,which they do, but I wonder if they have a narrower profile at the road contact point and that leads to a loss of high speed stability.

  4. Slow the steering a little, lower the seat height, get to the edges easier. Although depends on tyre brand: not all 190/50 are equal.

  5. Trivial, but are you running 36psi front and rear? Most bikes are 36 and 42, but I find this can destabilise the multi, but 36 front and rear works well.

  6. I haven't messed around with the tyre pressures but have been running 36 front and 40 rear. I know that isn't what is recommended in the manual but I was happy with the steering in the twisties at those pressures. I will try them at 36 front and rear and see how it goes. My thoughts on the 50 instead of55 profile was that maybe 55s would have more flex in them and cause the weaving. If the weather ever improves Ill try the pressures before I do anything to drastic. cheers all

  7. 36 rear works much better ime on every bike.

  8. I run the same pressures and have nevef had the bike weaving undef hard to full acceleration in bends or on straights.
