Does anyone have any words of wisdom on this subject? I'm in the process of ordering up a new machine, but apparently the BikeTrac tracker does no longer come with the bike. I've never had a bike with a tracker, so I don't really know the practical aspects eg: battery drain / effect or not on insurance cost / ease of use etc.. and any helpful hints would be most appreciated. thanks
I had to have one on mine, luckily I was able to take the one from my last bike and put it on. It makes absolutely no difference to the price of your insurance, and I wouldn’t have it if I didn’t have to, but couldn’t insure my bike without it. Mine is the Biketrac, it’s easy to use, has its own app, and hasn’t had any detrimental effect on the battery.
I have a Biketrac tracker installed, done by the dealer before delivery. As with @Multirider75 it was a requirement to get insurance. No issues with battery drain or other problems except forgetting to switch on the ignition before I before I wheel the bike in / out of the garage and disabling the alarm when the bike is at the dealers being serviced - but at least I know the system is working when I get the phone call
I had a Biketrac on my 1199, which did drain the battery when doing a Euro trackday. I'd turned off alerting but I am guessing the week it took from dropping off to getting to Valencia must have been tracking like crazy and drained the battery. I moved it to my 1299, but several years ago on checking the app the unit seems to think I'm at a petrol station in Wales and hasn't worked since, I suspect the internal battery has given up or the unit is toast. They're about the size of a packet of fags so quite easy to hide on a bike, personally I wouldn't have one if I didn't need to for insurance.
I've got the Biketrac. It was one of only 2 options that the insurance company I had at the time would consider as "ok". As others have said, it was a condition of my insurance. Once you buy the unit, you can move it between bikes too, so you can look at the purchase cost as a one-off in some ways. I've had my unit on the last 3 bikes I've had.
I’ve had a biketrac on my last two bikes (the dealer swapped it over for me). No issues, I do get a warning of a low battery when I forget to put the trickle charger on but this is only in the winter after maybe 6-8 weeks. I got mine as I was parking in central London. Don’t think it made much difference, if any, to insurance.
I use a Vodafone curve. It's not specific to bikes, it's just a key fob you can put anywhere. Very inexpensive. The only downside is battery life which is about 9 days. Otherwise it's a excellent product. Pings every few hours unless you ask via the app for live tracking.
I had a Datatool Stealth fitted to my 1200 MTS. It's great value compared to others and includes fitting. The installer came out to my work and fitted it which took about an hour. I've had no issues with the battery and it definitely works as I disconnected the battery when working on the bike and forgot to switch on the garage mode via the app. Within a couple of minutes I received a call and SMS's to confirm it's location and status.
had biketrac on V4 streetfighter when it came free with new bikes but didn't really like it. wasn't insurance requirement for me on the new V4PP so haven't bothered
I was considering one, but given there appears to be no discount on your insurance, I'm not sure now.
Apple airtag , £29 , battery lasts about a year. No subscription, and the size of a 50p. It pairs with an apple phone and the app of " find my phone"
I use Vodafone Curve on my bikes ... but just noticed - they've stopped selling them ? I hope it's because there's a new version coming out. They're cheap as chips and provide real-time tracking with geo-fencing.
Like others I had to have a tracker fitted as a requirement of my insurance company and opted for the Biketrac. The maker claims that the system doesn’t totally rely on satnav positioning but also emits radio signals to aid recovery if the stolen bike is containerised. I think there is a slight battery drain but it notifies you if your battery needs charging. As also noted above you need the ignition on to move the bike around otherwise you get a notification, although you can disable it on the app beforehand if you remember.
Bike trac as a requirement from my insurers at previous address. Works well and they're reassuringly swift to call if movement is detected with ignition off. Renewed for a new three year term last year.
I have an airtag, have you thought about that??, a single payment of 25 euros, and I can follow the motorcycle from any apple device that I have at hand, for me it is more than enough, it has an autonomous battery that I know will last me at least 2 years, it is the size of a coin, and it is almost undetectable for any petty thief, if it is a professional thief (thefts by order), they will take the motorcycle even if we put a sworn and armed guard on it, the airtag and insurance robbery, they are the best pagers, both in cost and in tranquility hehehehe
