Howdy all, ive a 2002 750ssie, relined tank over the winter, (fuel now comes out) when I turn and then flick on my start button there is no whine (there used to be) there is now an unsettling click click at the two regulators under the tank engine is trying to start, replaced the two regulators on LHS of battery, no joy am now crying, cant afford to send it into the MEGA expensive shops over here thatll touch a Ducati any recommendations peeps?
my pump would prime up with a distinctive whining sound (as ruadan puts it ) then stop when ignition turned on before actually starting up after start up couldn't tell you what it sounds like exhaust takes over then check fuses see if any corrosion on contacts also could check the wiring under the tank and se if you have a feed to the pump possibly it could be something like the relay for the pump is toast seem to think its not an uncommon problem just do a systematic check if pump has been sat dry maybe its internally stuck give it a tap ?
just had a thought (yes I know its dangerous) you could connect a direct 12v feed to the pump at the wires under the tank and see if pump operates ! also seem to remember someone else with a similar problem turned out to be the kill switch was faulty
Hi all, Indeed relays.......apologies So, All fuses good, kill switch good, have tank off and disassembled to begin a good look at/replace pump , wiring etc.
I had a similar issue about a year ago. My SS cut out with a mate riding, no fuel pump prime. I got the bike home and set to diagnosing the fault. I could hear the relay clicking, so checked at the connector for 12v - sure enough, there was 12v for about two seconds after turning the key which then shut off when the relay clicked - exactly what i was expecting. This led me to (not unreasonably) suspect the fuel pump. New pump, filter and pickup fitted....nothing. Ok, we have 12v at the connector, but its not reaching the pump, must be the fuel level sender, as its the only part which sits between the pump and connector. Changed this......nothing. out of desperation I changed the big 30A relay under the tank, despite it clearly clicking as the ignition turned on.. Fitted the new relay - success!!!! It turned out that although the relay was clicking over and supplying 12v, it had tarnished internally enough t hat while the voltage was correct, there was insufficient current to run the pump!
Not only can the fuse holder connections tarnish, but if it's anything like the earlier bikes, the big black square section block connector (contact surfaces) close to the 30 amp fuse can also tarnish enough to completely stop the starter motor churning.
