Hi all. Hope you’re all ok ish. Ref Rear light cluster movement and gap at top appearing. Over time my behind seems to have more and more movement of the entire black plastic light holder/ number plate holder . I have tried tightening the 4 bolts under the passenger seat to lessen the movement, seems they are as tight as possible and the problem remains. Riders following think it’s going to come off. Is this a common issue? There is also now a gap appearing above the red rear light lens too. Any ideas TIA. .
If you look at the inner circle of the attached pic, you will see a half round plasctic tang. If my memory serves me correctly, the rear light is held in place with this tang pushed or affixed to the light assembly and two screws that go through two rubber grommets which are at the lower corners each side of the rear of the rear light. I have a feeling the top of the light has popped out of its location, hence the droop. If you look at the rear of the light, you'll see 3 round tabs. These are the fixing points. Remove the rear under-tray and the light comes away with it. No need to detach anything else. Just the 4 under-tray bolts. Hope that helps.
Mine was the same when I bought it It’s a while ago now, but it’s something to do with the screws that hold it in place Either I used extra washers or I shorted the fixing screws, can’t remember Either way it was a quick and easy fix, just a bit bobbins really on a new bike.
Have you tried the washer truck, 4 bolts under pillion seat , add big washers, did the trick on mine.
What year is your bike? Reason I ask is I had a similar issue on my 11 plate. I made a pair of small u shaped brackets(flat bottomed) and fitted them between the two vertical tangs that are shown in your pic. I drilled the plastic and affixed the u brackets with fine, small rivets. The screw plate (as per your pic) slid onto the bracket and it all screwed back as per normal. You could try plastic welding it all together again.
I can recall doing very similar to Shoboshi and it's relatively simple and once done, very effective too. I like the idea of the superglue option, but suggest that due to the stress involved with the back end, bouncing up and down pretty much all the time when riding, it will not last long, if at all. Use some simple coated mild steel corner brackets with slots + lock nuts on S/S bolts, or at least coated bolts, then jobs a good-un!
Many thanks guys, but no one is more kak handed than me, that’s sounds like a big construction project to me, I’m not quite understanding it but you are dealing with an idiot!
I did put in 4 tap washers and that has worked fairly well, obviously doesn’t help with the other issue, I have stuffed some foam earplugs under the lens to try and minimise movement in the short term.
I used a glue called U Bond that a mates m/c shop recommended. It’s much better than superglue, which are not really that super. Also used it to repair rips in my Rukka too, very handy stuff.
