Hey chaps, been a while but I'm back. After having to get rid of my 749 a while back (ex wife yadda yadda) I found myself in a position where I could get another bike, had the option of a few makes but guess what..... They did nothing for me and I still hankered after another Ducati soooooo.... I bought a cheap high mileage 900 super light. It has been looked after but has sat for a couple of years, got carbon body work, (plastic fitted at the moment) and Composite wheels ( not fitted) and its filthy so lots of scrubbing needed !!!! The issues ... Turn on the ignition and the pump in the tank keeps buzzing, starts on the button and sounds amazing so guessing that's a relay knackered ? Petrol pissing out the right hand Carb throug the over flow, small pipe on the right hand side of the right hand bottom of the bowel, again guessing stuck needle/ float, need to get this sorted ASAP as its in th garage and we all woke up to the house stinking of petrol, the other half was not impressed !!!!!! No clutch wot so ever !!! But I can sort that no probs, possibly plates stuck together but the lever is really light so need to investigate So far that's all I've found, all the electrics seem fine, good tires loads of bits with it and lots of elbow grease needed. If anyone has any ideas regard issues mainly the carb I would be really greatful, Imagine the scene... Valentine's night, good food, good wine, and me in a Leopard skin thong ( hold ya self back Viv !!) and a room full of petrol fumes, don't think it would be ending as I'm hoping Tried uploading photos but wouldn't happen, will have another go. Good to be a Ducatisti again !!!! Cheers Si
WHERE THE FECK DID YOU FIND THAT!!!! and for how much? The issues ... Turn on the ignition and the pump in the tank keeps buzzing, starts on the button and sounds amazing so guessing that's a relay knackered ? Nope the pump comes on immediately irrespective of whether the bikes running or not Petrol pissing out the right hand Carb through the over flow, small pipe on the right hand side of the right hand bottom of the bowel, again guessing stuck needle/ float, need to get this sorted ASAP as its in th garage and we all woke up to the house stinking of petrol, the other half was not impressed !!!!!! Could be stuck float - wooden hammer handle, sharp blow to the side of the carb float, see if that curesd it till you can get it apart - failing that... Fuel Petcock under the tank, accessible with the tank down on the rhs if you have paedo paws, at least enough to shut it off. No clutch wot so ever !!! But I can sort that no probs, possibly plates stuck together but the lever is really light so need to investigate. might just be slave cylinder - you'll soon see when you remove the sprocket cover if the paints all bubbled up. Ducati do rebuild kit for around 30, or just go for oberon or similar.
Thanks for that sev, Was kinda thinking it could be something along those lines to get it temporarily sorted. Stupid question time, the petcock is the brass connector under the tank, if it is I've just disconnected the pipe and the section the pipe connects to has come away, so I've ended up with the part in the bottom of the tank and a section of brass pipe inside the rubber hose separate, if you get my meaning I'm assuming this shouldn't happen, don't you just love a project !!!! Hey El T , it's good to be back !!!!! Cheers birdie hope your well ? Found the bike on flea bay, was being sold on behalf of a customer through an engineering company that deals in British bikes in Cornwall, cost 3.900 Even with the issues think I've got a bit of a bargain, number 373, like I said carbon body work and composite wheels, it's got standard plastic body work at the moment and standard gold spotless 900 ss wheels. Think I've been a lucky bunny !!!!
so that's where my share of good fortune legged it off to! petcock looks like a little knurled knob to which the supply hose tees off from
Even with new floats and float valves correctly set, those BDST carb needle valves will still stick, causing a full tank to put enough pressure on the fuel line to start a siphon. My mate, (now deceased) used to PDI Ducatis for the company that took over Parkinson's old premises (and Parkies as well while they were still at Marks Tey IIRC). He said even brand new bikes would do it.
part number 58840051A Stein-Dinse GmbH Ersatzteillisten showing stock at 18 euro, so you should be able to pick it up from your dealer of choice
you might want to consider Al's facet pump suggestion -which I'm sure he'll go into if you ask him nicely. It's sound and might save some grief in the future. Also the starter leads will probably be past their best by now, so worth doing, and then take it form there
I'm hoping that a new petcock will do the trick, like I said it was running beautifully yesterday but...it now has a flat battery , gotta luv a Duc!!!! To clarify about the fuel pump ( sorry for what some may see as dumb questions) ignition on, pump runs continuously until it starts as that seems to be what's happening, would it not just run for a few seconds then cut off or is that related to the petcock issue ?
Pump runs all the time as soon as the ignition is switched on...........You can however, fit a switch in the pump wires so that you can switch it off when you are testing electrics etc (and you can hide the switch as a 'security measure')...it will only do about 1.5 miles without the pump running). As a favour, measure the thread of the petcock when you get it, please.....I think it is M12 x 1.0mm. Ta...
IIRC, I cut the red/black wire to the pump underneath the tank (on the downside of the tank wiring connector) and fitted a switch in-line..........your four wires should be brown/white; blue; red/black; black and should therefore be the same.
Sounds like you have something a little special there. Have fun and good luck. This place may come in handy: Ducati900sl.com (The Ducati Superlight register)
