Evening all, apologies for long post but bear with me Time has come for the winter strip down and clean so just exploring the bike in a bit more detail so got a few questions. Last march just before my trip to Spain with the lads from here I had the bike spotless and serviced myself (all liquids NOT belts) I've done about 3-3200miles this year so again going to change the liquids and get my 15000 miles service done in the new year. Nearing the end of the year I noticed my alternator side of the bike getting a bit noisier than normal, a bit like a dry clutch sound which would more a less disappear if I pulled the clutch in. I bled my clutch as my biting point was getting sharper but this has occurred a few times in 2 years and I believe just a Ducati thing (bike may stand for a few months between uses). After that my thought was the oil just thinning due the my mileage so I've dropped the oil, taken sump plug and gauze filter out and not filings on either so hopefully I can take out the serious main bearing etc issues. So, Ive taken both covers off and the belt tension covers the learn the bike and also look for anything obvious and heres where my questions are, on the below picture the starter gear cog which gears up the starter power has free movement back and forth (along the spline, no sideways movement) is this correct??? It is secured with bolt, washer and circlip, everything else looks in order. Secondly, when I took the clutch side cover off (alternator cover, clutch salve was already removed) I noticed the centre bearing(if it is a bearing) that the clutch pin from the slave cylinder pushes into from behind moves inwards by 2/3mm, I appreciate when the slave is connected on the other side this may take up the movement it has but without rebuilding the other side I can't recreate this so thought id ask. Thirdly and probably a bit more worrying for me, I removed the horizontal belt cover just the see if any bearings has any play in or anything unusual, just to make a point I have never seen or looked into belts as I let the dealership do my belts and valves. The belts were installed just short of 2 years ago (hence my 15k service in the new year) but they seem very loose to me. I downloaded the Tension app on my iPhone and if im doing correctly on the longest part of the belt i'm getting readings of 35-40hz but I may be doing it wrong I (hope so). Heres a youtube clip if it works as just made a account and Thanks Stu
Update, I have found out that on the intermediate gear it was updated with a floating pin design so that answers the float I have is normal. Thanks
Answer to your clutch pin, yes it will move when the slave cylinder has been removed, but I would say your bearing should be a bit tighter than that. When you install your slave cylinder try it again.
Thanks, I’ll rebuild it back up and see how it looks, if this moves more than it should that maybe it would produce the sound I’m having which would disappear when the clutch is pulled in..
Very close mate. I'm waiting for the call from the mechanic to tell me he's done his bit then it's just a mater of fitting some bits ( and maybe paint) and she's good to go! Hopefully.... How's my 848 running dude? (Apart from this lil noise) re that, ive had 2 presure plate bearings (1 ss 1 620ie) seieze up, neither were real noisy but a constant chirping sound... easy cheap fix... Your ss is missing ya bud!
I have just changed my clutch and pressure plate and I reused the old bearing that we are looking at. I had to belt mine out of the old pressure plate so it should be a bit tighter than that.
Sounds good fella, have to come a bit up north for a track day and ill come down. 848 is running well tbh, no faults just this noise which as described I don't think its anything bad just maybe the bearing on the clutch. If you need me to run in the track bike like I did with the SS then give me a shout as you'll not push it enough too get it warmed up
Perfect, appreciate it pal, im in the garage tomorrow so ill pull the clutch off and get one ordered. Thanks for the help.
Nice one! Will be at donnington on 14th may for the Ducati day, you going to that? Will be booking other days when I have some Money, let me know if ya want to join me dude would be cool to catch up.
