Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction here? I have a beautiful 2003 999s that I have actually only ridden 6 times (inc test ride). Apparently the crank bearing has collapsed (I cannot 100% confirm this as the bike has been sent away) and from the quotes, it looks like it cost up to about £5000 depending on all the internal damage. I don't fancy paying that to be honest. All help/advice would be useful Thanks in advance.
I had a crank bearing failure on my ST4s (996). Does yours sound like a turbine? Mine did. I took the engine out and took it to Ducati John in Leeds, he rebuilt it completely, changing anything and everything that was worn or could wear, including a new gear box set, admittedly it was a couple of years ago now, but it was a fraction of that price. Certainly worth exploring. Ducati John Tim
how long have you had the bike? did you buy from a dealer or private sale? if it was from a dealer I'd be going back to them, assuming you ride it more than once a year and haven't racked up epic mileage on those six rides.
Thanks Tim, I have rung John and he seems like a nice bloke who knows what he is talking about. He did seem surprised that my 999 is 140bhp at the wheel though?! I brought the bike in January, it was a private sale unfortunatly, it started of with electrical issues and ment I didn't get to ride it for the first 3/4 months, then even once we managed to sort of solve it, it was still blowing the rear lamps however. I don't think I have actually done that many miles on the rides, 300/400 tops. Shit happens I guess
When mine when I was quoted around £1500. But I found an engine instead. £5000 seems excessive, Id sell you mine for less that that!
My mate will likely be selling his 999R engine soon - reckon he would let it go for £1.8k if you want me to give you first dibs?
that is so ridiculously cheap I am almost tempted. Thanks for the last engine by the way, starting and sounding terrifying - testing it at Cadwell this weekend
Hi everyone!! Thank you guys a lot for the information and offers. I'm just waiting for a few replys and I can decide what I exactly what to do. I love my ducati and already finding this forum full of good people and information. Thanks again
Thank you for the offer, I do want to keep the 999 engine however, if I hear of anyone that needs a 749 then I shall let you know
Try and get one that's proven running and preferably a recent full valve clearance / belt service if your lucky enough to find one - this can add hundreds to the cost, and an Engine off Ebay could end up as bad as yours in a few miles!
I know you are a long way off but a call to Nelly at Cornerspeed may shed some honest light on your position, he's a good egg. Cornerspeed
I believe Carl already a s the bike and dosen't have time at the moment to have a look at it from what my friends have said. I am lucky that I have so far had two good offers for engines so I might just swap it out (obv check it out first)
