Hi all, I am thinking about buying the bike in the attached picture. It's been fully restored and looks fantastic however, I'm not sure about the frame colour. I am used to seeing them with either a white frame on the earlier models or the bronze frame on later versions. I did read somewhere that the '93 model (this one) did come out late in its run with a gold frame as a lead into the launch of the 916 in '94 with a gold frame but I haven't been able to verify this? Does anyone know if this is a standard colour or has the restorer used the wrong colour? I know the 'normal' standard colours for the later model are: Frame: SALCHI Colver Bronze grey 339 7017 fairings: SALCHI Anniversary Red 539 5013 Just not sure about the gold.
if it is meant to be the same colour as the 916 etc. frames then it looks the wrong colour to me. The 916 type frames were matt gold whereas the frame in the photo looks to be gloss and the wrong shade. The Red may also not be the correct colour as there are some Nissan and Ferrari Reds that are very close to the original Ducati red. ICI manufacture spray paint for both these colours and I am not sure why anyone who was trying to undertake an accurate restoration, if that is what it was meant to be would not use them, unless they were unaware of their existence.
I don't like that frame colour. Personally if that had been my restoration I would have done the job properly with the correct colour. The body work looks wrong colour too. Being picky I don't like that screen and the mirrors should be black. I don't have a problem with owners modding their bikes bit if it's supposed to be a restoration then it's not quite right.
I think you are right about the gold frame, I've certainly never seen one in that shade. On the plus side it really does look like a quality restoration and you have the bonus of a rear brake conversion.
Thanks for the info guys, I didn't think it looked right. It in a dealer who is asking $7990 Australia or nearest offer. I'm wondering if I should make a lower offer and buy it anyway, ride it for summer and then pull it apart and re-do the resto properly over winter, given it has the brake mod and looks petty clean. It has 66000 km on it. Anyone have an opinion? I'm struggling to decide....
I don't know about Australia, but they are still on the rise here pricewise. Due to mileage and depending on work done/who did work on engine, that could probably fetch around £3000 plus next summer here in the UK.
So Chris, would you buy it if you could get it close to $7000 AUD (around 3300 pound)? As a rider fir now with the intention of another down to frame respray in the future?
Hi Chris, I don't know, I'm going to look at it tomorrow, is at a dealer thats sells all sorts of bikes so I'd be surprised if they know anything about it. I wanted to get a resto project, I was hoping for a lower priced one but they are getting hard to find. This is more than I wanted to pay, but if its sound it might be a good rider for summer and then throw some money at it over winter....
It's not something that necessary puts me off, but I think the average person needs a documented history present particular when there's been a restoration before they will pay the going rate so if there are no invoices for work done ( particularly where the engine is concerned) then A/Beware and B/ bartering should be possible.
Yes, I agree Chris, I will go and see how much they will haggle, being a dealer I'm not sure how low they will go though. If I get it and do a restoration myself I'd have the engine refreshed as part of it and therefore would have receipts etc...
I haven't researched, but I get the feeling that is a good price for a 900 SS in Australia? Either that or the trader is going to be lucky in having you as a purchaser.
I hope it's not the latter... here's some examples of others around in Australia at the moment: 1995 Ducati 900SS Full Fairing 1996 DUCATI 900CC 900 SS FFAIRING in TUGUN QLD FOR SALE - Autotrader.com.au
Ooooo yuck that frame colour is awful My SS was a gold frame and it certainly wasn't that colour My mirrors were black It's VERY shiny Perhaps go look at it and take some pics and post them here
I'm going to look at it tomorrow Ducbird, I will take some pics and post them, I'll also ask a lot of questions around the history of the bike as well, ill post some of that info as well. I have only ever seen photos of the bike so looking at it in the flesh tomorrow will be good, I know photos can distort colours a bit but I don't think this much. We have also see bike 'butchered' by people modifying the colour scheme before, I think this is one of them. Nothing a complete strip down and repaint wont fix tho....
haggle the dealer rag it over summer then make it your own over next winter you wont regret it ..........your wallet might though
It looks like a nice bike which someone has spent a lot of time/money on. I'd check it's not on the Accident Register (if there is such a thing in Oz). whilst you're getting pics, get one of their bins - Ducbird has a thing for bins, and you'll be in credit
