  1. I returned from a 2500 mile trip today (UK - Sardinia) and the Multi performed brilliantly.

However, I now need a new rear tyre. I am currently running Angel GTs, but I wanted to ask what other tyres people have tried?

The GT are OK, but I’m open to alternatives.

  2. After weeks and weeks of research and countless youtube vids and magazine writeups to find the the answer to the same question, I finally decided to go for the Metzeler Roadtec 01's and I must say that they are brilliant.

Metzeler are owned by Pirelli and there is speculation that the Roadtec 01's are basically the Angel GT's anyway but with a bit more tecnology.

  3. After some research and asking another very experienced MTS owner and forum regular I went for the Michelin Road 5.
I’m not that experienced as a rider but the difference in grip and the confidence boost they’ve given me has been fantastic.
To be fair the Michelin Road 4s they replace we’re stepped on the front rhs and starting to square on the rear, they weren’t doing much for the handling.
    Chalk and cheese

  4. Used a set of the roadtec 01 on my dvt. Very nice tire. Grip was good and I got about 7500 miles out of the set.

  5. Another Roadtech user - very happy
P.S. Sardinia is great isn't it...

  6. Metzeler Z8s will be cheaper than the Roadtec and its a sportier profile. Worth a look.

  7. Thanks for all the suggestions.

After some dithering, I have opted for a straight replacement for what I have on the bike at the moment. Another Pirelli Angel GT. The reason for this was twofold, firstly it's been fine in the last 4000 miles (since I bought the bike) in all sorts of conditions. Secondly, I have an Angel GT on the front, so will swap out both tyres next time for something else, perhaps.

  8. Michelin PR5s all day. the difference they make to the overall handling is night and day. Love them.

  9. I'm very cynical about comparing name brands.
They all make a good tires in their respective categories.
IMHO, it's the right choice for you in these categories that counts more than the brand.
In the Pirelli lineup for example:
    80/20 Track/Road- Supercorsa SP
    50/50 R/T- Rosso Corsa
    80/20 R/T Rosso 3
    Sport Touring- Angel GT
    On/Off paved road- Scorpion Trails

As an aside, have you ever read a bad tire review from mainstream Moto journalists?
I haven't. They would not be invited back to the luscious boondoggle trips to Europe if they did.

  10. From my experience, having covered over 70k miles using both PR4's and Road 5's, I found no significant benefit from the Road 5 over the PR4 in terms of grip (wet or dry), handling, wear pattern or durability to justify the additional cost, subsequently I've gone back to using PR4's. Can't comment on other brands as I've only used Michelins on the 3 Multistradas I've owned.

  11. Thanks for raising the cost factor. I should have touched on that.
I think choosing the right tires for your application takes precedent over brands. But money talks.
My only personal caveats is maintaining the integrity of the pair. I.E. if I switch from one category or brand, I'll replace both the front and rear simultaneously as I believe they are designed to work together.

Here's a good comparo highlighting the pros and cons of a few tires we may be considering.
BTW, there's no bad choices here. They're just different based on your needs.
    Enjoy.

  12. Road 5s Enough said.

  13. As a sport touring tire, the Road 5 is a good choice.
Then again, any offering from these top manufacturers will do fine.

However, a sport touring tire is a bad choice as a :
    Track tire,
Hyper sport road tire for dry tarmac,
    On/Off road tire,
    Enduro tire.
