999 Neglected Tank

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by 916CornerSpeed, Jul 24, 2019.

  1. Any suggestions on how to deal with a neglected 999 tank? I'm considering cleaning and sealing with POR 15. Anyone had to deal with something similar on a 999/749?

  2. Cider vinegar - a gallon is quite cheap and will take the rust off overnight, or use electrickery witchcraft as mentioned on here recently :eyes:

  3. Phosphoric acid (google it ) dissolves the rust and protects the surface, used it a few times over the years with no issues ( similar to vinegar but chemically different )
if it's surface rust nothing else required if its deep pitting the tank want's sealing

  4. Thanks for the info.

I finally found some time 2 weeks ago to flatten back the rust using 150grit paper.

I was cautious about using any chemicals for fear of flash rusting, if I wasn't going to follow up with a sealant of some sort.

Earlier in the year i used a more extreme technique involving brick acid on a couple of old yamaha tanks, Then successfully sealed with POR15.
