ok have a 99 model 750 ss the neutral light switch is missing ( a lovely bolt doing a great impersonation ) right i know there is differences in wiring but is there physical differences ie thread size etc main reason is i am led to believe the engine has been changed at some point so wondered if there was a difference between model years the wiring on the loom is a single wire with waterproof connect ducati dealer tell me there is a difference but didnt know what.......... any thoughts or advice
It appears that the early carbed SS up to about 97 - 98 had a two wire switch......after that, the IEs seem to be a single wire. The two wire type should have a light blue and a dark blue/yellow wires.........the single wire appears to be blue/yellow and an earthed body. I believe you should have a two wire switch....my bike is a 97......I also have a sidestand switch from a 98 and I wonder if they are the same (not checked, really)....both are two wire. If you look up the frame verticals on the same side as the switch, you should find a spare pair of connectors if yours is missing.........I assume your neutral light doesn't work at all. AL
have a single wire with waterproof connector but if i have an early model engine ie carb will single wire switch still fit / work
Johnboy I've a 94/95 900ss an there is only a single wire to the neutral switch. The switch is not a straight screw in as they are shimmed to the correct contact depth which can be a bit of a bugger to get right due to the limited access ability.
I believe the single wire switch is a different size to the 2-wire. It won't be compatible electrically (without some work) as the 2-wire switches the positive and the single wire switches the negative (through the casing of the switch/engine). I'm currently dealing with this on my Monster as the engine has a 2-wire switch but the wiring loom is for single wire, this is the easiest way to modify as I only need to connect the 'other' wire to earth rather than the wiring loom.
know what your saying had more bikes without idiot lights than with just thought if its there may aswell see if i can get it working
The single wire is has voltage on it, it is spring loaded to contact the selector drum, the drum has a 'tufnol' insulating insert where the switch plunger makes contact, when the drum is in neutral, there is no insulating material so a circuit is made to ground.
I have got SS wiring diagrams from 1991 to 2002, including the Ducati ones....All carbed ones show a two wire neutral switch, colours as I described above....... The way to test John's one is to connect it to the loom and push the plunger manually....earth the body to the engine first and check the neutral light comes on..... .....mine is two wire, but you wouldn't know unless you trimmed some of the sleeving off or looked inside the loom end plug.
