Neutral switch question - please help?

Discussion in 'Sport Touring' started by markyp33, Apr 29, 2012.

  1. Hi

I have a 'T' registered ST2. The neutral switch was broken when I bought it. I have purchased a new one, but think I may have got the wrong one.

My switch had two wires on it, but the one I purchased has one wire coming off of it, into a round connector with a single pin in it. The part number is 53940201A.

Mechanically they look identical, but electrically different.

Can the new one be fitted or will I have to send it back? Unfortunately, I bought it from the Netherlands and had it sent over by UPS

    Any help or comments appreciated

    Cheers

  2. You should be able to make it work as long as you have basic electrical knowledge and some ability to test. Check your connection to loom and see if they both have 12V, both are earth, one of each or one is dead and one has either earth or 12V. I the last option where one is dead is most likely as 2 wire switch operates by closing the circuit.
To test dead wire is dead connect earth part of tester to it and 12V part to battery, there should be no reading. The same 12V connect earth bit to earth point like battery or engine and 12V to wire.
Next test only do if you are certain that one of the wires is dead and one is either earth or 12V, if it is one of each do not link them for obvious reasons.

If you arc the two wires at the loom end where double wire switch would plug in your neutral light should light up.
Single wire switch operates by grounding the circuit when it is engaged so like connecting one of the wires directly to engine. If one of the wires is 12V and one dead I am quite certain you are stuffed and new new switch. If one is earth and one dead you are good to go just connect the dead one to single wire of new switch and you should be a go then isolate the other one or for better earth link it to engine or something.

  3. Hi Lucazade

Thanks for the swift reply. I am reasonably competent with a tester, but would like to clarify I have understood you correctly if poss.

    1) If I test each wire down to ground (engine) and there is no reading it will prove there is not 12v on either wire.
    2) If I then put the tester on a 12v supply and test to each cable I can prove if one of them goes to ground if I get a 12 reading?

Are we saying that it can work one of two ways:-

    1) It will either take 12v to the switch, and then when the switch is made put it back in to light the neutral light on the second wire
    2) or there will be a permanent 12 to the bulb and the switch will effectively close and make the path to ground on the other side of the bulb?

Bear with me on this, lol

    Thanks again

  4. 1st part in short yes. Have earth side of tester touching the engine. Then touch each wire and see if you get 12V. Then kind off reverse. Put positive side of tester to battery and touch each wire with earth to look for reading (unless obviously you already got reading the 1st time). That way you will establish which one is what. For 2nd part it is option 1. There will be 12V to switch and when switch is activated it will pass on the 12V to light bulb. In that situation only option is to make new loom directly to neutral light. Not worth it just get correct switch. If your loom wires are earth easy fix as described at the start.

  5. Obviously do that with ignition on.

  6. Thanks Lucazade - fully understand now. Invaluable

Just gotta go and do it now, lol

  7. The switch on your bike switches a 12V positive to the neutral lamp. The single wire type switches the earth, with the lamp having a 12V feed to it on ignition ON.
You've got some swapping about to do at the lamp end as well as with the switch, if you use the single wire switch. I'd get the correct switch and sort it as intended tbh.

  8. Here you go Nelly confirmed what I was not certain get a new switch is the easiest option.

  9. Thank you both. I bought it from:

    Ducati Parts Online
    Industriepark 6
    6603 BG
    Wijchen
    The Netherlands

which I kind of regret now as I have to post it back there! lol

    Oh well, my own fault.

Sincerely - thank you everyone for your help - I really appreciate it

    Cheers - MarkP
