New clutch and oil (wet) help

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Pits, Mar 5, 2013.

  1. Getting major clutch slip on my 750SS ie now (MY00) when I bought the bike it was fine, then I had it serviced and the clutch started slipping, I was told it was a weak clutch by the garage, but after a bit of searching I think that's a load of crap.

Now I have lived with it for about 5k miles, as it only slipped when warm and at certain revs, now it is going down hill rapidly, so what is the best clutch kit to go for, and what is the best oil, I believe it has Yamlube in there now and I don't want to put it back in and have clutch slip again.

    Cheers

  2. IIRC some fully synthetic oils can cause similar symptoms, otherwise maybe check through the hydraulics and slave cylinder, (does it have one?)

  3. Fully synth shouldn't cause problems these days. Are you sure it's not just down to worn plates?

  4. I used to get terrible clutch slip using fully syth on my DD bike, switched to semi and it was fine but the bigger question is how old is the clutch? It's not a big job to check the plates and you don't even need to drop the oil.

  5. 16k miles on clutch plates, to be honest I have resigned myself to the fact that the plates will need replacing, I mean age, use, oil. Rather just do it all and be done with it, hence looking for the best oil and the best plates to go for

  6. I've got the same dillema on my '93 750ss at the moment. Most specialists seem to agree that a fully synthetic oil will promote clutch slip. I rang Baines racing and they recomend Rock oil Guardian 20/50 semi synthetic on bikes with wet clutches. I was surprised at the 20/50 grade but they assure me it makes the gearbox feel good. I'm also considering fitting the Suzuki clutch plates (£30) but need to make sure they fit before I buy them. They seem to be getting mixed reviews from the people using them in dry clutched ss's.

  7. Fully synthetic does promote clutch slip, your right. I know somebody who had a wet clutch monster, 750 i think. change the oil to fully syn, big troubles with the clutch. had to strip-down and fit new clutch. although if the clutch is on its way out, its not going to help matters. I put fully syn in my aprilia, no troubles with it.

  8. Used RockOil on the DD bike worked a treat, but I guess any semi synth should work

  9. Have a word with someone like Nelly from Cornerspeed. In another thread about 848 oil, he recommends fully synth even in wet clutches.
I'm fairly sure, most modern sports bikes (with wet clutches) suggest using fully synth.

  10. Having said that, I use Motul 15/50 semi in the DD bike

  11. I've used Shell and Motul fully synths in wet clutch bikes with no problems. Road and DD. I know some of the DD lads had trouble with the Shell that was supplied in the sponsor packs of old though....
I've seen problems with fully synth Castrol and Silkolene and after a clean and fresh Shell/Motul they've been ok.

I'm now using Motul 7100 full synth as my regular service oil and have had no issues in 3 years on any of the bikes... MTS11/12, 848, Diavel, ST's etc. 300V in Panigales is also fine.

It is worth checking the clutch system also. Make sure the lever has some free play so the system doesn't pump up, the slave cylinder is ok and not binding, pushrod is ok and not fractured.
If the clutch is allowed to slip for any length of time, it'll wear prematurely and no matter what oil goes in, it'll slip.

  12. Well, I know the clutch has about had it so it is being replaced, decided on 10/40 semi synth Gaurdian oil, now I just need to know which is the best clutch kit to buy.

  13. OEM....not the cheapest option but it takes the guess work out of diganosing a problem should one still be present....

  14. I do prefer OEM, but I have read so many different things between OEM and Barnett clutches, one about the springs being weak in the Barnett clutches, but other people have really good reviews of the Barnett clutches.

Will have to get a price from Riders for OEM clutch

  15. OR you could PM Nelly for a price  (he is a Ducati Dealer)

  16. But if I email him, how will I get to go and sit on the 848 Corse that is in Riders :frown:
