I need a new pump for a 748 2000 bp. Its been layed up for 10 years now the pump wont work. Has anyone replaced 1 recently and can recommend a replacement ? Cheers.
I had the same problem but used brake cleaner and squirted it in the pump and that freed it up. However, I did buy a replacement and Bosch, who actually made those pumps, can supply one, I got mine via eBay. Tap in the part number and it should come up. Don't be tempted to buy cheap replacement pumps as they are not exactly the same fit.
although I admit that it is a bit of a minefield, I've been using "cheap replacement fuel pumps" for over 10 years and they certainly last as long as the Bosch originals at sometimes a quarter of the price. it all started with me when someone said they'd used a Mazda MX5 version, and even this was cheaper than the Ducati/Bosch unit. if in any doubt, always fit the original of course but each to their own. regular use is the trick of course, goes without saying, my current pump in my MultiStrada has been going for over three years now, and it was about £22.
looking at the typical residue it could just be "gummed" but not worth the risk (for me) even if you get it working as a lot of work if it fails in a year. Do you have a source for submersible fuel hose? Pirtek outlets have it for one, but check out Ducati prices obviously - they might be cheaper than in the past.
Thanks Chris, I will check out Pirtek. I will be honest I cant see the pump working again. I put my hand in the tank and it is caked up with a white crust. No rust spotted as yet. I am looking at ways of cleaning it out on yutube.
You could try having it ultrasonically cleaned and if nothing else the pump baseplate might come up a lot cleaner. Do you know if the fuel level sender unit is OK?. You probably might need a new fuel filter just as a matter of course.
Those fuel hoses are Cohline-2190 NBR I'm convinced that it's the ethanol added to petrol that makes them turn to mush . Prices vary ....... a lot ! By far the best value is from one of these suppliers :- https://www.glencoeltd.co.uk/cohline-2190-in-tank-high-pressure-fuel-hose-8mm-push-on/ https://www.advancedfluidsolutions.co.uk @Chris is right ...... you can never trust the fuel pump again , assuming you could get it running ..... it's just going to fail , down the road , and leave you stranded ..... sooner or later
I didn't think of ultrasonic cleaning, good call. I will look to see if there is anything near me, even if its just for other parts of the bike. But It looks like a new pump, filter and hoses. I am not sure about the the level sender, the light was on but it was low anyway. I will clean it and chance my luck.
Also looking into QR fittings for fuel tank. Will the original fuel lines reach the tank with QR fittings. Are plastic fittings Ok ? Big difference in prices.
I had similar with my 916. I took pump unit off. Plugged it into 12v supply, tapped it on my vice. It spat out some black mush, then spun freely. Until then it was not working and looked dead. All my black hoeses were like yours. I replaced all of them and now its all fine.
The pipes dissolve a black goo into everything. It clogs up all the filters. Replace them all as a matter of course. Theyre pretty cheap. All that goo had got into the pump and seized it. A simple tap against my vice was all it took to help dislodge it all. Dont spin pump without any pressure too much tho as pumps dont like working without any head for too long. You may find the inside of your tank is lined with it too. I had to clean my tank. I used the knackered fuel already in it. It makes a real mess those pipes disintegrating. But its an easy job, just a dirty smelly one. I use coffee paper filters to strain the fuel afterwards (so I can use it to clean chains etc). The shit the paper filters out is surprising.
Ok just ordered a Bosch fuel pump off good old Amazon for £59.58 free next day delivery with Prime. They are almost double that on Ebay.
Do you have the Bosch part number - I’m sure I’ve got a similar issue as my external fuel lines on the base plate have melted into a black mush. (Pump doesn’t prime and fuses/relays/connections all good!) Cheers.
I bought it off Amazon. I think it probably came from Germany. I will try and dig up the info where I bought it from , if you want it. It was a bargain. Bought a new nut for the fuel sender and cleaned the shite out of the sender by soaking it in a jar of clean petrol. But all works excellent, and mine was well gummed up.
This is the pump I ordered. I have even seen some cheaper but not sure if they were Bosch. The only difference is the end of the pump has a different looking end cap that takes the petrol in. Honestly it hasn't made any difference. If you need details of the other bits I sourced, let me know.
