New Monster 1200r

  1. I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts or hunches regarding when the new Monster 1200R might be coming out. I own a 2014 Monster 1200S, which I'm looking to trade in. After having ridden the new 2017 1200S and the 1200R back to back at a demo the other week, I'm completely won over by the R, despite it lacking all of the electronic tricks of the new S. Do I wait (indefinitely?) for the new R to arrive, or try and land a deal on the current one?

  2. What makes you think they will do a new R ? It's only just 12months old. How long was it between S models ?

  3. As I understand it the whole point of an "R" bike is that it has the best of everything available in its class. When Ducati brought out the Monster 1200R last year it was the first time they'd applied the "R" designation to the Monster line-up, and was (in my opinion) born as a result of the development they'd done on the 2014 Monster 1200. So it was released out of phase with the typically roughly 3 year cycle that manufacturers normally apply. I would have thought they have to play catch up now, as it doesn't make much marketing sense to have an R model in the range that doesn't have the bells and whistles (quick shift, LED lights, cornering ABS etc) of its S counterpart?

  4. I can see that but if they brought out a new R, they'd loose sales of the new S. If you checked out the new S, you'd see the horrible / cheap switchgear (in my view)

The current R is still higher spec with respect to engine internals and is a much better ride still than the new S (from my dealer friend who's ridden them both)

All depends what you want out of the bike I guess.

I'm still happy with my R, although a bit miffed at the QS, but as I've never used one, I don't feel I've lost out.

  5. I wouldn't worry too much about the QS on the 2017 S tbh. 1 or 2 others have said it's not as good as you think it should be. Should Ducati decide to add a QS, I seriously might think if the longevity will be similar to the 1198SP, which after a years chewed engines and gearboxes for fun. I had a look at it recently and compared to a 1299 the Monster S version is a bit swiss cheese. If you're looking for a decent Blipper/QS, have a look at the BSD 1. Hopefully they'll do 1 for the Monster R at some point. The Monster R should be a smooth enough change without needing 1. It wouldn't worry me buying a non QS R over the S version. So I really think that all of those who are annoyed about the R not having 1 are far better off without it. I compare the R to the old S4RS and that never needed a QS.

  6. I have an R that I bought new last summer. I had a tuono v4r prior and the quick shifter, though not necessary, was great fun. The R should have come with one.

The R is a great bike and is clearly a quality piece of kit and rides great. Softer than the Tuono, but more than enough for happy days street riding.

I can see a revised R coming in 2018 with the electronic pack of the S.

  7. Hi, I just registered on the forum as very much interested in Ducati and lately the Monster 1200 R which I tried and frankly was very positively impressed.

Only a few days ago I called Ducati in Borgo Panigale to ask about a new possible 1200 R since they just renewed the 1200 and 1200S.

I was clearly answered that Ducati will not renew the 1200 R for this year for sure, the Monster 1200 R for 2017 remains exactly as it is.
