I've a 96 900 SL, got a puncture in a Dunlop Sportsmax Qualifier II rear late last year after pretty much zero miles. Got it professionally plugged and have ridden only a few hundred miles on it. Last night was out and got a lump of metal in it that seemed to go in at an angle - tyre may be scrap ? I'd rather not splash out £130 on another of the same - the front is also a near new matching Qualifier II tyre. Question - with good similar type tyres available cheaper, eg Diablo Rosso II etc, at a good £25 less is this a recommended move or would everyone suggest a matched rear - front pair ? I'm a sunny weather rider and won't be venturing on track. Cheers, Andy
Got to ask what your insurance would say in the (hopefully unlikely) event of an off. A vehicle examiner will pick it up. At the ragged edge, different compounds could result in unpredictable handling. People do mix tyres without issue but is £25 worth taking a chance ? Andy
I know that insurance companies try to minimise payouts but 2 tyres with decent tread still visible would be better than 1 very worn and a matched brand but brand new ? I don't think I've ever ridden on the edge never mind the ragged edge - no knee down for me on the Duke, it is a toy for bumbling about on !
