Hi guys, been a rider since noah was a lad and have had the usual machines from a fizzy to YDS7 through the seventies superbikes and my last bike was a Triumph daytona which I was knocked off breaking most bones in my body including 7 spinal fractures and semi amputated leg, I have restored various bikes over the years but never had a ducati, I work as a truck driver and in the bike racing scene at club level running the startline for thundersport GB, I recently had some bad news re health and will at some point end up with time on my hands. To this end a mate has given me a ducati to strip and rebuild make good again and genrally sort out, its an old 1989 900ss with a few tweeks from standard as far as I can see, Mikuni carbs RG fairing conversion, very nice blue and gold paint but on the downside its been left in someones garden for years and is full of webs and did have the remains of some climbing shrub in the front fairing, the clutch is seized and the front calipers are binding which I can sort without too much effort, my main concern is the multi pin plug under the seat unit is not plugged into anything? does anyone know if this bike has a cdi unit or an ECU? I am assuming a cdi as its a simple carbed bike so not overly electronic, anyone point me in the direction of what I need, cost and maybe compatable replacement parts, thanks
Yeah good luck. Post up pictures of the resto. Its good to follow things like that. Theres lots people who can help you on here and someone will pop along soon to point you in numerous directions.
Hello and welcome! Can't help with your questions I'm afraid but look forward to following the restoration.
Hi There, I have one a 1990, the same model, ignition is a Magneti Marelli digiplex 2S MED 442A, I will photo later & post piccie. I too have Mikunis as original weber was shite. Look forward to seeing your progress. Mine too is wip, 90k miles & owned since new... Youts has a later model tank which hinges, much better than the original.
Hyper, there seems to be a lot of those units listed for cars, I assume they are re programmable for whatever vehicle its plugged into?
If you cant find one from a duke then possibly someone could re flash it? not sure who. the later models use 2 Kukusan units triggered by 2 pickups & a different flywheel, our model has 1 pickup
Hi you are right, it was used on a Moto Guzzi and some Pasos and some early Fiats but not programmable as far as i'm aware. This Forum will be a great help :- ducatipaso.org • Index page (got an '89 900SS myself)
Welcome to the forum. Lots on info and experienced people. Looks like a great project you've got going there
Startline, I may sell my unit, this thread took me to various other forums & I may go the Ignitech programmable ignition route. Mine was fully working with no faults 2 years ago, bike stood since.
thanks everyone, always nice to be made welcome. The bike will be on the back burner over the summer months as much of my time will be spent trackside running the startline for Thundersport GB but I have bought the ignition from hyperbimduke so once everything has been stripped sorted and rebuilt including new belts etc we will give it a go, I know already its going to be a keeper, oh and looked at th speedo today to find its done 16.500 miles from new LOL
Your dragging this out a little - should be finished by now!! OK so it was in our workshop for a short while before donating to a good cause. See you Friday at sunny Brands.
well a fine day for working in the barn, clutch stripped out of the 900ss which was seized solid and a pile of rust, its a dry clutch by the way Mark Lumb, oil dropped, but unbelievably clean with no signs of water, belt covers off to find belts and pulleys that apart from a bit of surface rust look brand new, engine turned over on jump leads without any issues, every bolt nut so far removed has been a doddle due to it all being coated in copper grease by whoever last played with it, bearing in mind the bike has been stored in a garden under a sheet for over ten years its in amazing nick, the strip down continues, its fantastic to be pottering about in the workshop again
well its now in many many bits in the barn, all part required are sourced and before the strip down began she was running, just hope it still does afterwards, pics of engine with all the crud and corrosion removed, and pre starting, and a pic of the frame the forks and wheel are now out and the frame is sitting on the engine mounts, new belts will be fitted in a few weeks and a new coat of heatproof paint applied to the now shiney engine
Hi all the engine is now ready to go, corrosion off new heatproof on highlights and a bit of polish, new belts and clutch sorted, happy so far that its coming on, I was going to upgrade the forks brakes etc to upside down and radial brakes but I think it would look better with th original stuff so refurb of the forks and swingarm will begin today
Hi all she's almost done, back together and running like a dream, I know it was supposed to take a long time but it became addictive waiting for a new screen (NSR 250 FAIRING) and mirrors, need to bleed out the brakes and clutch and polish the inside of the fairings but almost done, it will be for sale when complete by the way
By the way anyone who's interested the screen mirrors and a new battery are on order, tyres are sportsmax with a trackday only off them, the clutch and brakes are due a bleed and its going to go on Ebay with a reserve, keep an eye out in a few weeks it will be on sale, bike is as you can see fully rebuilt, new belts oil filters recent tyres, its got the Mikuni twin carbs instead of the bloody awful standard, NSR 250 fairing, nice paint as you can see she's a pretty bike, if you go to my FB page you can see and hear it running
