Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by egcDuc, Mar 3, 2019.

  1. Hi everyone. Im new to this forum and I have acquired a 1973 Ducati Monza 160 which is in need of care. I love working of motorbikes and thought this would be a good project but just wondering if anyone else on this forum has the same bike and if they have any tips on going about it all and where to find workshop manuals for it as im not 100% sure on where to start. Thanks in advance.

  8. Hi @egcDuc -
Congrats on your acquisition. What do you want to know? I too have a 160 Monza Junior. This is what mine looks like:

The 160 MJ was made in 1964, 1965 and 1966. Mine is a 1965 one, and your looks to be the same. If yours was not registered until 1973, it may be one of the large batch which sat in Bill Hannah's warehouse for several years.

If the rear sprocket is the original one, the bike is seriously undergeared; a sprocket with 5 or 6 less teeth is about right.
If you want to get the correct decals, try Robert Derrick:

    Hi @Pete1950
Thanks for your reply, love your bike thats how clean i would love to get this little ducati to. Oh right i never knew that, how would i find out the proper year for it or is there no way as it was registered in 1973? Ah right great ill have a look and see if the rear sprocket has been changed or not. Great ill order them decals as want to get the bike all sorted and nice and clean again. The question i have is the speedo/dash is not original and have no idea what has been done with it, i would love to eventually get it back to original but will probably be alot of money to do as i need everything, if im correct there is a key which when you turn it gives you power for lights and to kick start but i dont have that so when i put a battery in would it constantly have power? Ill attach a picture of the speedo/dash.

  16. The 1964 160MJ had rounded tank & mudguard style, and short side panels. The 1965 version had square creases on the tank & mudguards, and long side panels - like yours. The 1966 one was similar but with a different headlamp.

From your photos, there are lots of good/correct parts on your 160MJ, including the tinware (except for the paint). The centre-stand appears to be missing. The instrument panel and speedo are off something completely different, not a Ducati. The tail-lamp is from about 1971. The silencer is not the correct one.

Some 160MJ parts are the same as fitted to narrow-case 125/175/200/250 Ducatis, so you might be able to source some bits from:
    http://www.ducativintagestore.com/ducati_motorbyke_1962/1968?pag=1&p_count=-1

The carburettor is a Dellorto UB22. You might be able to source parts from Eurocarb.
    https://www.dellorto.co.uk/product-...o-vintage-carburettors-and-parts/ub-mb-parts/

MDINA have some singles parts, but only a few bits would fit a 160MJ.

I have a few old MJ160 parts which I could let you have if you want. They are not in good condition, and would need to be cleaned up, painted, etc.

Frankly it would not be worth spending a lot of money restoring your bike, so I would suggest you try and do it fairly cheaply.
