Hi, Newbie to forum here.. Just bought a 2001 748S that's been in storage for 11 years due to owner going through a messy divorce. Bikes only done 6000 miles. Planning to change oils, belts, filters, battery etc. Would appreciate any other advise you guys could offer on things I should be checking or changing before turning the key. Many thanks James
Hey congratulations ! I do like the 'S' variant. Seems like you have most bits covered i bought an 'R' which was stored away for most of its life. The only other thing I changed was the chain as some of the O-Rings may have deteriated but that's me just being over cautious. Be great to see some pics Good luck
Might wanna check the belt tensioner bearings, and flush the tank through with fuel/injection cleaner. Check the reg/rec is working to prevent a first ride disappointment too. Any problems will become apparent in the first few months. They're strangely more reliable the more often you ride them. They don't like being sat about. All in all though, welcome to the club, you're going to love it.
If it's been 11 years I'd change the brake fluid, clutch fluid, coolant, tank the tank off and swill it out, and the one thing everyone forgets; tyres.
+1 on the tyres. When I bought mine it had been laid up for about 4 years and they'd gone proper hard. Found that out by stuffing it into a roundabout a little hastily and it decided it wanted to do the 2-wheel sidesways shuffle. No drama. Lovely bikes that love to be ridden, enjoy.
