Hi all. i have a 600 ss and recently did the fork seals and replaced a couple of other parts. Thought it was all clean and ready to rumble but now I have noticed the bottom section of my exhaust have some oil leak out, obviously she's burning some oil. anyone got any pointers as to what it could be? Thanks
How do you know its oil and not petrol or water?................just because its dark might not mean oil..........so it could be just dirty condensation. .......and where on the bottom section is it showing? Near the front or near the back? Could be a leaky manifold gasket, leaky oil drain plug, possibly even a leaky oil filter.....any of them to start with. AL
(If the picture worked) its at these 2 joints after each manifold was worse but the 'oil' or what ever it may be burnt off a bit.
Looks like cruddy condensation to me.....ie, it has picked up soot on its way out...... ....if it was burning oil you would see some blue-ish smoke from your exhaust outlet (black if it was petrol).......... But tighten up the joints and it may stop......or if that doesn't work, take them off, clean them up, wipes some silicone on them when you reassemble and it should be OK. AL
After warming up it started smoking with a light white smoke but soon cleared up and was fine on the ride home. Many thanks for your advise. Good to hear from people that know there stuff. Josh
White smoke = Steam (have you left the kettle on?) caused by condensation in the zorst system.......... At a guess you have been starting it up and not going anywhere, then letting it cool down, probably late afternnon / early evening......or letting it cool down in the garage / shed.... AL
I wish the kettle was on, its alot less stressful drinking tea than panicking over nothing. Yeah its new to me so there's been a lot of starting it just to hear her tick over.
Not a good idea......it never gets fully warmed up and the oil doesn't get nicely spread about........ Still soon be ready to give it a decent run, now.....??
Right I woke up this morning afyer a long ride yesterday to this... Escaping out the exhaust connections again.
define "long ride" also dip a finger in the stuff and do a taste test.........water or oil? then get some exhaust putty/sealer and stick it in the joint.
That's a helluva lot of oil to be coming out of the zorst!..............are you sure its not petrol? If it is oil, and its not dripping onto the zorst pipe from somewhere else (like neutral switch) As supervee says, taste it.....and feel it.........make sure its what you think it is. However / wherever it could be getting into the zorst system in that quantity can only be at the engine end, therefore if it was oil you would be billowing couds of blue-ish smoke behind you. AL
Just out of intrest what's the miles on the bike? Like Al said its alot of oil, you must look like a red arrow!!
That looks more like a fuel stain on the slabs. Unlatch the tank and have a good feel underneath for leaks.
Hi all it was about a 50 mile ride, its slightly oily water and when i washed the slabs down there was the rainbow effect in the water. aparently when i give it some beans a bit of smoke puffs out but not too bad. its just ticked on to 16662 miles. haha brilliant i have always wanted to be a red arrow pilot.
oily water? that's not good. you sure? tighten everything up. wash bike and engine thoroughly, let it dry overnight then run it up to temp on the driveway, maybe stand it on a white sheet/paper and watch carefully, see where leak originates from.
Its condensation running to the lowest point............I notice that my after market Laser cans still had the tiny drain hole like most japs bikes do in the cans...........I don't know if Ducati have one in the OEM cans. AL
yeah im 100% its coming from the pipes where the connect at both points, but in the picture above i had been out for the ride, parked it up and it was fine, then when i awoke in the morning i came across this 'puddle' of mess.
Condensation then - two options. Drill a drain hole on each pipe at the lowest point. Or split then seal the joint - properly.
