Thought I'd share my crappy day putting some extras on the 1098. Maybe others have come across these problems or at least have a laugh at my expense. Been away for a few weeks working so I like to buy a few things to look forward to for when I get home. This trip I had ordered a genuine Ducati paddock stand (ebay), Conquest Carbon hugger, key guard, and front mudguard and some titanium sprocket nuts. Today was the day I was going to fit it all and admire. However, it all went tits up right from the off. First job, put it on the stand.Start easy and work up. Turns out the stand doesn't fit as although its for a 1098 they are different axle diameters between the years. Can't buy the pins either. Balls! Move onto the next job.... Conquest Carbon key guard. After taking the original off and playing around for 45 minutes (as well as taking the steering damper off) it doesn't fit. Doesn't look close to fitting either. Bolt holes aren't matching up and looks like it needs re-shaping to fit? I'll have to ask Conquest Carbon on this as I thought buying from them that it would be better than others on the net. FFS not going well. OK, stay calm and move on... Front Mudguard. Piece of piss to fit. couple of allen keys for bolts on the side and rear (holding the brake lines) and job done. Not a chance! One allen head bolt rounded off. Sorted that then find that the rear bolt holding the brake lines isn't a bolt but is indeed a rivet of some kind. Have nothing to take it off or anything to replace it with after. By this point i'm raging. I decide that to hell with putting the bits on I'll just go and ride the thing and forget about it. Then it rains!!!!!!!! I've spent many a day adding bits to bikes but never a day like this. I guess the moral of this story is that aftermarket parts don't work/fit as well all the time as genuine and don't be a tight arse and get someone else to do it.
Sometimes shit happens. Leave it alone and returned with renewed enthusiasm another day. That does for me.
I do share your woes with the fasteners on the front mudguard. I've got a 1098S and needed to get the mudguard off to get the forks out for new seals. Every one welded in with oodles of Loctite, thanks Ducati. I had to grind slots in the all of them and punch them out with a hammer and chisel. Made a few marks on the mudguard too. I replaced with SS and lots of Moly grease instead of fffff'n Loctite. The clip on mine is a rivet too but it only holds the line that loops across the calipers and is as much use as a chocolate fireguard as the line always just jumps out of the clip. If it was me I'd just ignore the thing and let that loop of hose sit how it wants. The clip does FA John
I had a day like that a couple of weekends ago, wrong adaptors for Abba stand (replaced no hassle, excellent service), wiring connector for car stereo didn't fit, went to top up gearbox oil in car to find the oil ran out, wiring bullets on other car turned out to be non-standard etc. etc. When I have a day like that I now just give up and depending on the time of day get a cuppa or a beer. Otherwise I've been known to throw spanners like a spoilt child......and then moan that the car/fridge/whatever now has a dent in it!! It always works out though and you feel a bit more accomplished as it wasn't straightforward. Good luck next time you have a go.
Yep Defo one of those days. I know if/when I try again it'll all come together. Just everything I touched turned to shit. Ha. I'll take the front mudguard off and see what happens to the brake lines. Gotta a few ideas now anyway. Always the way when sitting relaxed rather than raging. I didn't even think to try fit it over the top. Is that how they normally come?
Had the same with a paddock stand I bought off eBay .... Pin wouldn't fit in axle , took it to local engineering shop and got it turned down on the lathe
