Nikasil cylinder barrel coatings

  1. Nikasil cylinder barrel coatings -

Pantah era engines had all-alloy barrels (no steel liner) with Nikasil coated bores. These were made by Gilardoni. If a bore is worn out, damaged or corroded it cannot be rebored or honed. It has to be re-coated with Nikasil. This is a highly specialised process, not widely used nowadays except on two-strokes.

I have just taken a barrel to Langcourt Ltd of Weston Super Mare, Somerset who are among the few specialists in this process. They should have it done in a couple of weeks. I look forward to seeing if they do a good job. Will post the outcome on here.

  2. Langcourt have replated the barrels on both my 916 and Monster (also overbored) and did an excellent job with quick turnaround, highly recommended... :upyeah:

  3. Pete.................Grandma and eggs probably, but if you have chrome rings, be very careful running it in....chrome and Nikasil are a good combination, but they don't like each other and you have to keep the revs and heat down for quite a lot of miles.

  4. Langcourt phoned me today (14 Jan) to say my barrel is done and ready for collection. Pretty quick service.

  5. I need a 916 barrel doing. What sort of money am I looking at chaps

  6. Had these guys do my KTM barrel after I fell in a welsh river and sucked in water, bending the rod and scoring the bore. Very good quality work, decent price and fast turnaround.

  7. I had both barrels done last year, cost me £265.

  8. Just about to get the head back from repair that cost £450 with a set of forged valves. The barrel is scored so it looks like £130+ and I think I will get another set of the forged valves for the other head. Nowts cheap with these bikes

  9. Apparently mine is about £100 + vat. Just Nikasil in the 74mm bore, no other damage to repair.

  10. Just got the re-nikasiled barrel back from Langcourt Ltd. It looks absolutely perfect, just like a brand new part.

  11. I remember the first Jaguar V8 engined cars that were launched pre 2000 . These had Nikasil liners and were nothing but problems. Jaguar had to replace almost the entire fleet of cars under warranty by swopping out the whole engine and moved away from Nikasil from 2000 onwards.

  12. BMW had big problems with their 6 cyl 2.5L (and others) apparently the sulphur content in certain fuels was eroding the Nikasil?

I had a 1996 323 (2.5L 6 cyl) with Alloy block/Nikasil bores - they wore so much that it sometimes wouldn't get any compression on starting so just spun round and it used loads of oil.

Fortunately BMW replaced the block for one with cast-iron liners F.O.C. but the whole episode cost them a fortune.

  13. Chrome rings, IIRC........

Chrome rings and Nikasil don't go well together.....
