Nitrile Vs Viton

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by RC1, May 27, 2023.

  1. I want to buy o rings. Am I right to think that black ones are always nitrile or silicon and green ones viton?
And for most applications on our bikes nitrile is what they use at the factory aside from things like fuel pump?

Bikes in question are from early to mid 2000s

  2. What you describe make sense. But this is Ducati. The ones on my 916 injectors are black. I only took them off yesterday. I would assume these to be some fuel resistant ones and was surprised they were not green.

  3. Both are ok for fuel and oil, viton is better at high temperatures.
I used them in high temperature fuel lines. Also got viton in brown....

  4. Viton is a DuPont trademarked brand name. O-rings made from DuPont’s Viton material come in green, brown & black. Whilst both Nitrile rubber and Viton are oil/fuel resistant, viton can withstand much higher temperatures than nitrile.

  5. 130C-ish max temp comes to mind for Viton, but I'd need to check that.
