No Headlight,

  1. I hate electrics or it’s vis a versa.

I’m currently trying to put my Monster back on the road everything now works apart from the headlight. Sidelights work but no joy with the dipped and main,

Previous owner installed a HiD system, I’ve replaced the gubbins that power the bulb to no great effect.

Anyone shed any headlight on the issue or should I just torch the damn beast.

  2. does the main work when you use the pass/flash switch? if so, i'm gonna go with the headlight relay. it happened to me in Ullapool at dusk with 3-4hrs of travel time to get home.

  3. No mate, I’ve tried that when the dipped didn’t work. If I hit the pass trigger or main beam button only the magnet that actuates main works but no lights.

  4. only top of head, but there is a connector buried somewhere around handlebars/forks/headlamp shell area isn't there? - could be light corrosion on one (see wot i did there?)

  5. I can see that it’s very illuminating.

I’ve traced the wires and there is no broken or loose connection, it’s utterly baffling.

  6. BOO.
i guess the multimeter is coming out. magnets? Doh, is that how they work? 1 single filament bulb with a movable reflector? if so, you would think i should of known that. jeezo fin, yah chube.

  7. I guess it is or the matches, yes the bulb itself moves back inside the reflector housing. It might be I disturbed a connector whilst I took the carbs out for an ultrasonic bath.

It’s a pity I didn’t check the lights before working on other parts of the bike, it’s baffling me as the sidelights work and I’d hoped they were on the same circuit.

  8. What model / year of Monster?

  9. The M900 a K plate so very early has Cagiva Elefants on which are @Chris favourite stamping on anything Ducati.

  10. I hope I’ve found the answer.

HiD bulbs won’t work without the engine running, unfortunately my battery is flat and I can’t start the engine and no I’m not bump starting it.
I’ve only managed to bump start a Ducati once and that was with my 14 Stone brother on board and me pushing…..

  11. I had a dipping HID on my 916. It will work withe the engine not running. But it won't work if the battery is flat

  12. So the only working with the engine running is a myth, back to square one.

  13. Has the ballast failed or is that the gubbins you replaced? Definitely getting power to the ballast?

  14. Ballast was replaced as was the fused relay, nothing has been touched on the bike for around 5 years. I was surprised to find the headlight not working. Yes power to the ballast power and to the switch for high beam.

I may torch it………..my hate for electrics grows…

  15. Yes and no. Depends on the bike, for early stuff with a switch to turn on the lights, they work off the switch so not true. For later stuff where the lights come on automatically once the engine is running and there's no on switch, then it's true.

  16. Put power direct to the ballast from a battery and it should light up, if it doesn’t it’s a ballast/bulb problem if it does then it’s a switch/loom problem.

  17. wish you were round the corner, at least they are simple overall. a wiggle and a wriggle and a spray often works if it's standing time only and no "big" corrosion going on.
