1200 Noob advice needed ???

  1. Hi guys,
Have been bitten by the Muttley bug (and old age) so the 1098s has to go , errr maybe !. I like the idea of the Pikes Peak version purely for the looks and exhaust setup , question is which one ?
I have had a quick look in the forum and am left with a choice , do I go with the Ohlins model ( and get the upgraded suspension ECU ) or go with the newer Skyhook model ? A couple of bikes around to look at but I dont know enough about them yet !
I will be buying second hand to begin with and see if I can keep the 1098s as well !
Or is it worth considering a 1200S and getting a full titanium system fitted ? The same question applies though , Ohlins or Skyhook ?.
It will be used for commuting to work and sharpish 'Sunday' blasts so no great distances envisaged, at the moment, I can get panniers and stuff when needed.
All advice welcome , just need a place to start.

  2. Absolutely no idea I'm affraid but boy oh boy am I glad that the advice you seek wasn't where to put the tax disc.......
My opinion keep the 1098 as even if you just look at it occasionally it will still make you feel as though you've still got some life in you and you're not ready for a flip up helmet and intercom.

  3. After years on Ducatisti I wouldnt dare ask about where to put the tax disc :) I know what you mean about keeping the 1098S its had years of love and care , and money thrown at it ! Plus the 80 mile tank range gives me a chance for a rest !!

    Pmsl

I've not gone flip up helmet and intercom, although maybe having the track bike helps :)

  5. I miss my old 1098S Trico :(

  6. Well I do have a flip up helmet and intercom, but you would need to catch me to notice :D

You will find supporters of both ohlins and skyhook.
The question will likely come down to how much you want to spend, and how important a warranty is to you.
I like the ohlins so went for a late unregd one rather than skyhook, and spent the money on mods.

  7. If you go Ohlins (like me and John W) you can also just add the official Ohlins SCU semi active suspension for the princely sum of £250

    It's a bargain really

  8. If you go Pikes Peak the colour schemes on the Ohlins and Skyhook are quite different , dont know if that would influence your decision

  9. Two up with luggage wont be a decider for me either. The skyhook model I looked at (Ducati Glasgow) did have a Leo Vince decat fitted though. In saying that I am still swayed towards the Ohlins equipped model though as I have heard good things about the upgraded mechatronic ECU.

Mileage on both was still under 5k and price was similar (around 15k) due to the ohlins model coming with all the luggage as an extra. Colour scheme I can live with on either model.

Would I be just as well getting a 1200S and doing the mods , i.e. ECU , and exhaust system ??

Just have to buy a flip up lid and intercom now , hmmmmmm are those compulsory with a muttley ?? ;)

    Decisions, decisions :)

  10. Not compulsory no, but then I do have a flip up lid and an intercom LOL.

  11. I don't think that is correct.
The 2011 Pikes Peak had the original paint scheme (black/white/red), but fairly certain the 2012 pike peak was the new 'corse stripe' version, the same as the 2013 & 2014 ones.

The pikes peak has different wheels, and carbon bits that the S touring doesnt have, but then the touring does have heated grips, centre stand and panniers as standard.
there is no power or performance difference.
I dont think second hand there is any premium for a pikes peak over the touring, just depends on what kit is more important to you ;)

  12. Skyhook latest tech. Ohlins lovely and blingy.

  13. I don't know John, I've looked at a fair amount of images due to sorting out my/your design and I'm yet to see an official red corse stripe pikes peak with gold ohlins forks.

Pretty sure that scheme is Sachs only

I could be wrong though .....

  14. My PP is 2012 and is red , white and black with gold ohlins. The newer paint scheme that followed ( red and white ) had the skyhook Sachs as you say.
As John says no difference in power just a few bits and pieces specific to either one.

  15. Interesting. My mate has an original (ie not fake) 2012 PP and it is the later corse stripe colours...

Maybe his was late 2012, will have to ask him.

I will update my memory banks accordingly ;)

Edit - I just did a quick search and it was the actual pikes peak bikes in 2012 that were the new colours. Will find out from my mate what the story is on his bike.

  16. Hi John, Mine was early 2012 April. I think you are correct the later bikes that year came in the new colours .Thanks again for brake advice.:upyeah:
