Noob question

  1. Hi all, new to the forum. Hope it's cool to jump in with a question.

Been riding for 4 months, had a vfr. Last night I tried a late model 749 and an early monster 1100 (59 plate). Both had the full termi pipes and sounded wonderful.

think sadly the 749 riding position is a bit too extreme for me - but a friend is actually selling his 796 monster also.

so my question to you is - which one to get? I ride a lot in town. Bikes are same price:

Monster 1100, 16k miles, full service history including 15k service. Tracker and meta alarm fitted, termi pipes, comes with some luggage. Dry clutch 59 plate (early 2010).

    or

Monster 796, 3300 miles, from late December. Termis, bar end mirrors and rizoma grips. Fsh, wet clutch.

    Any opinions greatly appreciated!

  2. Sorry meant to put the 796 is from late 2010.

is there a big fun difference, sound difference between the two?

    thanks again,
    Tedward

  3. If you ride a lot in town then step away from the 749

  4. I'd say the bigger bike.

  5. If you do a lot of town riding I'd say the 796, or the 1100, suppose it comes down to price.

  6. Thanks for the initial responses. If they are the same price, then I guess it comes down to: Power differential/fun factor, mileage (as the 1100 has 16k and the 796 has 3.5k), and which one will be easier to ride about in town. Is a 16k mileage bike going to suffer poor residuals?

  7. Hello and welcome to the forum
If your doing lots of town riding I would go with the monster it will be more comfortable than being sport rider hunched or riding one handed.
The SS wasn't the most comfortable at low speeds or through town
Both though nice bikes you may just go out of town more :)

  8. Thanks! Sorry my post was a bit muddled. What I mean is should I get a newer, tidier 796 with termis, or a higher mileage slightly older 1100 with the same setup? Both are monsters.

  9. Is there much difference in their conditions? You mention the 796 is tidier, but how much? If there isn't too much difference I'd probably opt for the 1100 purely because if you bought the 796 you might find that you end up wanting more power, then you've got to change bikes again.

  10. Thanks for that - quite a bit.. the 1100 is a bit more scuffed etc, and the 796 is mint. The main thing there is the mileage and age, with about a year older for the 1100 and it's done 12k more miles at 15.5k versus 3.3k for the 796.

  11. And I re read it drrrr
    Note to self read properly

  12. Sounds like the 1100 hasn't been as well looked after then. It may have been serviced as per the book, but not as well cared for so maybe the 796 becomes the better option. Have you ridden the 796 yet? You might be surprised at its power.

  13. Yeah, there's that potentially, and then there's the mileage - it's ok now but if I do 5k on each bike and then go to sell/px, then the value would be hit quite badly on the 1100 (would be 22k miles nearly). Do you think mileage above 20k would put you off on a 2-3 year old bike?

Sorry for all the questions - really appreciate the feedback. Am leaning towards the 796 so far.. just hoping it will sound as great! I haven't actually ridden a 796, but 1100 was plenty for me.. Will do the odd motorway blast for 60miles etc.

  14. 796 for me, unless you are a true hero and can ride the gonads off it, in which case go for the 1100.

    is what I would, anyway.

  15. Yep - got for the 796. Plenty powerful enough if you've only been riding 4 months - and enough capability for you to grow-into and not get bored of as your skills improve. More manageable in town as well I'd say.

  16. errr the 1100 mate. Much more power to get into trouble with :upyeah:

  17. I had a 796 to use while my 848 was being serviced. Absolutely loved it. So easy to ride and just felt 'fun'. So much that I considered buying one to use as a daily run around.

if the 796 is in better condition I'd go for that. Are they both out of warranty now?

  18. Go and ask for an insurance quote first. They may already have decided which one you can have.

Or, in town get the 796.

  19. if you weigh a bit , go for the 1100...

  20. Hey, yep both out of warranty! I am seriously thinking about buying the 796 then getting a sbk in the spring too, if I can afford it! Loved the feel of the 749 just know its not ok for town. Quite rev happy for a v twin I thought?

Haha and no 72kg should be fine!
