Leaving on the 19th of June 2016 on my Multistrada GT 2013 to do a tour of Norway in 2 weeks with a mate on his KTM1190R We had planned to grab a freight ferry from Grimsby but all cancelled or booked and no passenger routes available. Alternative plan is now instead of 3500 riding we now have 6200 miles after a chunnel crossing and through France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden then into Norway. We intend to wild camp in Norway as much as we can and both ex squaddies so don't need 5 star accommodation . Any tips or cheats anyone knows in the most expensive country in Europe. we are already carrying as much of our own food and booze as we can (bless the GT Panniers )
Sounds fantastic. One day I'll get there! Always wanted to go and stand at the bottom of Troll Wall and get an idea of what these nutters did. It's a BASE jumping spot now and the route is regularly climbed in a day but these lads did it first and was filmed in the absence of GoPro's and drones. Epic.
You could try using huts (hytte) which can be anything from a shed with bunk beds to a cabin with toilet and shower. They'll save you time pitching and striking the tent especially if it's raining. Most had a small, electric hob which save breaking out the stoves for cooking. Back in the mid 1980s I rode up Sweden and down Norway with 3 friends. We ended up finding huts every night. Made the tour more pleasant because we had a fair bit of rain and it even snowed on the road from Kiruna to Narvik, that was in in mid August. We were lucky, in those days there were ferry services direct to Norway from the UK (e.g Harwich/Gothenburg, Newcastle/Bergen).
We are aware of the hytte;s and if we get soaked will be looking for one if the kit needs drying out or if we are particularly knackered. Some of the camping will be at high level to avoid any mossies and why we are going this month and not in July or August. and on the speeding subject...... well aware of the Norwegian plod attitude and penalties so will be vary careful to avoid inviting a bumming
But you'l miss the referendum . Avon' skin so soft' best anti bug cream on the market . even if unintended.
We will be mainly looping around south of Trondheim as we didn't fancy the Nordkapp there and back run .... wave when you see us
1 weeks to go ..... not excited at all Bike is all sorted Full desmo service done 3000 miles early as would be 3500 late by the time we got back. Fork seals replaced New chain and sprockets New brake pads all round New fluids all round New Bridgestone T30 tyres fitted here is the planned routes while in Norway enjoying the best bits without going for the Arctic circle option leaving 4am Sunday morning to hit early tunnel then blast up to Denmark for 1st nights campsite, then through Denmark and Sweden on day 2 crossing at Oresund Bridge then into Norway for more relaxed mileage about 300 a day instead of 1700 in 2 days
You could get a ferry in Immingham that goes to either Gothenburg in Sweden or a more direct route Brevik in Norway I see plenty of bikes coming in around this time of the year... pm for the phone number
That's going to be an amazing trip. It was something I always fancied doing in the brief time I had the 1190R last year. I did about 9 months over three trips to north Norway when I was in the Marines and always like to go back to see places from a different angle.
Damn, I looked all over for a route and couldn't find anything but the immingham-brevik route would have been perfect.
We knew about the immingham route last year and were told we could only book a certain few weeks before the date we wanted as the cabins were very limited in number. Rang up at 9am on the day instructed to be told it was fully booked for that crossing and the next 2 !! Appears their booking policy depends on being a regular transport customer or a one off like us . Shame as it was ideal for us
I am ex forces but didn't train in Norway, mate who I am going with is Ex REME (everyone needs plugs on something ) and spent a fair bit of time there as a kid in frozen lakes so has been back on the bike 7 years ago and again with me this time so he knows the way about and all the lovely gravel trails into the sides of mountains that are laughably called tunnels ..... cant wait and will find out if "Enduro" setting is any good
You could also get the overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam (P&O). Sails every night & would save a lot of miles
If your on the E39 between Bergen & Stryn on a Thursday evening be sure to drop in and see Per at the Sande Kro Hotel (Just along the road from my head office). He serves up a mighty 'Raspeballer'. Be sure to stiffen up yer shocks after a plate of that stuff.
