Hi all I've done an engine swap putting an st4 916 lump into a 750ss frame. Dvla want a letter from ducati saying this engine number is 916 c and it runs on petrol. Despite me sending a copy of driving licence, v5 of bike engine number to ducati they say they cant verity engine size once engine is out of donor bike. I don't have the donor bike as I bought engine from ebay. Can anyone offer any assistance please? Cheers Kevin
When I changed the engine in my Monster, they wanted proof of capacity/engine no. from the garage that fitted it. As I fitted it myself I didn't have that but they did accept a receipt for the new engine from the breaker who sold it to me. Can the supplier give you something? Alternatively you could probably get some kind of engineer's report from an MOT garage? How old is the SS? asking because if it's old enough to be 'historic' then you don't need any evidence as I found out when I swapped the engine in my Land Rover - though I doubt your SS is 40+ years old...
Hi I have the ebay receipt from the breaker I bought it from (no engine number on receipt though). Ss is 2001 so unfortunately not vintage enough yet. Thank you for heads up, I'll go back to dvla offering email trail of when I bought the engine. It's moronic as engine number starts with ZDM916 - DUH Cheers
They expect Ducati to have info on an engine that is at least 21 years old!!!! Perhaps they do but will they provide the info FOC. The engine number starts ZDM916 A quick Google shows that this is the prefix of a 916 engine. Are there any displacement numbers cast into the engine like on Jap bikes. Measure the engine stroke. Think the 916 was 66mm. Video the measurement.
Thanks all for the advice. I've emailed dvla with all I've got and I'll see what sort of mood they are in. Cheers
Dvla wrote back to me saying they wanted a letter from an independent garage confirming the engine number fitted and what fuel it runs on. Letter said send letter back to a specific person at dvla - John someone. I got my mot station to provide above info on their letter headed stationary. Sent off to dvla with v5 again. Got new v5 this morn with new engine number and "916cc" as engine size - result. Customer service and helpfulness is alive and well in Swansea
I found dealing with DVLA to be very good once I got a specific person to deal with. Polite emails definitely helped smooth the process.
