998 Ohlins Forks In A 998s

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Not Carl Fogarty, Jun 28, 2016.

  1. Just putting the ohlins forks in the 998.

I have looked in both the 998s owners book (not a proper manual) and the 998 FE owners book and it does not state the fork position in the yokes as far as I can see. I states the settings comp/rebound etc and dimensions of fork tubes and travel...

I think ducati dad gave me some info and 244mm measure from the top of the bottom yoke to the top of the fork outer tube (marked in red - B - )

I have compared the Ohlins to the Showa forks.
The Ohlins are 5.5mm longer from spindle to top, the grooves are very similar size (although my vernier battery was flat) so had to measure with a ruler.

If I install them like this i.e. I drop that goove down with the red arrow point it to it... I am 4 grooves only just visible. I recall Cream Revenge said the Showa have 3 rings visible - Although I am not sure where they measure the 3 rings / grooves from? this would tie up with this 244mm measure.. Obviously I could be way off if I am not measuring from the right place of counting the groves / rings correctly.

A good clear photo would be great to compare

Heres some pictures for reference ... could someone take a look and advise.
Measurement marked A and B would be great. Ohlins forks 998s.jpg

  2. In the RS manual the measurement is taken from the underside of the bottom yoke to the fork leg bottom/oil seal. Unfortunately my Ohlins are attached to the bike that is currently at Moto Rapido but they show 5 or 6 rings above the top yoke. Andy

  3. Interesting Andy, are the RS forks different?
These are the 998FE/R forks that fit the standard 998 calipers. I could really do with a good picture showing the number of ring grooves a stock set up is... I want it all stock, before I have it set up professionally.

The measurement as I understand it as I explained above, would tie in with Cream Revenges post on the suspension thread of 3 rings, each grove/ring is about 4mm.

If these forks are 5.5mm longer, 4 rings (1 extra) would be within 1.5mm of the Showa setup. Of the Showa set up if that is stock. I could work back from a Stock Showa set up if I had that measurement. My bike was not standard so no reference point.

I'm waiting on an airbox turning up but I don't want to be stripping it down later, I rather get it right now while access is easy.

    I thought I had it right :(

  4. 748RS workshop manual has the ride height for the front at 185mm measured from the underside of the bottom clamp as mentioned previously. Rear ride height is 245mm from the centre of the axle to the top of the ride height tool. These are 24.5 degree steering head angle measurements. 23.5 degree increases the measurement by 4mm. I don't see the 998 being much different. Andy

  5. Hi mate. That's a little bit higher than mine. On the inside of the top yoke, mine's level with the second ring. (Not saying mine's set at how it should be, just the way they were set up on the last bike).

  6. Andy if the 748RS has a triple clamp as standard?.. i.e 3 bolts on the bottom yoke.
I imagine that bottom yoke is thicker. I would think if you measure from the bottom yoke of that yoke it would be a different measure from mine perhaps, without comparing them.

Bettes: I've just checked mine and his has 2.5 rings on the inside. With the measure as above image.
I assume you mean from this angle you have 2?

I think I will leave it as is now.. I can't seem to get a definitive answer re stock.
I need the 998s FE or 998R measurement to be sure.

I'd be happy with a 998 Showa (stock) measurement to work the ohlins from.. The Ohlins need to be through the top yoke by +5.5mm to be the same by my estimations.

  7. I'll see if I can find some photos of my 748R in standard trim. Andy

  8. I am thinking I may just run what Bettes does, He reported similar issues to me.

Ducati dad's 244mm if I have measured it correctly would put me very near Bettes descripition, if I understand (Ian) / Bettes correctly.. as per the photo above..

  9. Yes mate. That's the one.
Just out of interest, most people seam to have 4 or 5 rings showing with the showas and that for me just made it too nervous. As soon as I dropped them to 2 or 3 rings showing, the bike was miles more stable.

In other words, what might be ok for one, might not work with another. Still, easy enough to change so maybe having a play about with the height might be the best way forward...

  11. Not really no Bettes. Obviously lots of personal preference on set ups but I want to start with stock.. I've looked through all the manuals etc I have access to and no specific measurement or number of groves showing which seems odd as this has got to be as important rear ride height.

I've looked at loads of photos on line[IMG]: Ducati-998S-Final-Edition-Plaque (1).jpg

The number of images like this, tell me the 2 groves on the inside means the front end is either stock or not too high like this as a starting point, this also compares with the 244mm measurement Ducati Dad gave me if I recall correctly.
Also as or similar to you run Bettes...

I can work out rear ride height now. Just need a tool.

I am waiting on a carbon air box turning up before I can put the bike back on the road.. I want to do a few jobs while the fairing is off.

I am not happy with the speedo drive clearance to the disc bolts.. I may have a spacer made and run different clocks.

  12. I can lend you the tool if you want... Just pay postage and return.

  13. Thanks Ian I may take you up on that when the bike is back together. I want the tank on etc before setting the back end.

If that's ok?... hopefully in the next couple of weeks, subject to airbox turning up.
