Any taste/preferences? Is this OTT for road use: MOTUL 300V 10w40 & HF153 Oil Filter - DUCATI 999/R/S [03-06] | eBay Would this suffice: MOTUL 7100 10w40 & K&N KN-153 Oil Filter DUCATI 999/R/S [03-06] | eBay
Not a lot of difference in price of the two you are looking at and either will do nicely, I have only used 300v in my ducati. Steve
I use 300V in my track bike and Shell in my 998 and 748SPS but will be moving to Motul on oil change. I recently rebuilt my Yamaha RD250LC and that now runs Motul in everything that has oil in it including the forks. The two stroke oil is very expensive for what it is but the difference in noticeable on startup and when it's fully warmed up. Use the best you can afford for more peace of mind and engine longevity.
Neither for me thanks. Too many people think that a make name is ten times as good as other oils when an engine failure due to engine oil is unheard of.
Dropped the oil and took strainer out. Strainer is knackered/squashed and was really think in gunk. Is there any benefits/point in chucking in some cheap oil/filter and doing an easy 50mls and throwing it as a flush?
I believe this is what Steve @Mr.R does after an engine rebuild so I can't see why it shouldn't help flush it out. Steve
If it were me I would investigate a good flushing oil, plenty on eBay and use that. It depends on how bad you think the engine might be.
Most oils on the market are way good enough. Its oil contamination you need to worry about. Providing you do regular changes, will be ok. Book yourself on the Hydraulics course at NFC in Worksop however, and you will never dare to put oil in your bike again!
This stuff? COMMA MOTORWAY MINERAL OIL 20W50/20 50 4.5L | eBay The oil that came out looks ok, although 20 months old. No bits on the sump plug. It was the strainer I didn't like, totally blocked with sludge. When I removed it, more oil came out the sump.
not good huh. squashed flat too, which made it fun to get out. Either it was oil pressure from it being blocked, or somebody stood on it and stuffed it back in.
Looking clean is not a scientific measurement of oil serviceability. We used to have an EFDC (Early Failure Detection Centre) at most of the RAF bases that I have worked at and you would be surprised at how much use an engine oil can sustain and still be serviceable.
7100 is a fully synthetic road oil. Should be perfect. Racing oil doesn't tend to have corrosion inhibitors etc that a road engine needs.
