Hi guys. What oil are you lads recommending for the 749. It's been raced if that makes any difference. Fully or semi synthetic? What viscosity 10w40? 15w50 and why? I always used semi rock oil 10w40 but Ducati seem to want us all the use Shell.
Fully synthetic on my 999. I don't bother with Shell now, I just use any brand of motorcycle 10w40 - unless it looks too cheap Someone will be along shortly to tell you why you should only use <whatever> .
Speaking of Shell....I spotted this earlier.... Shell Ultra Advance 10w40 8L Fully Synthetic Motorcycle Engine Oil x 2 | eBay
Motul 300V and nothing else. Ive tried them all and with this stuff you really can tell the difference. If its general riding then 10W40 is fine. If its getting track abuse then thicker oil is a good idea. The semi v's fully is a no brainier.
Maybe because its what dealerships use. Maybe because its a cool floro green/yellow. One thing for sure is my bike runs better on it and you can feel the difference. Yes its expensive but give it a go and see. If swapping oil I would do a full oil change and drain the oil cooler too. Just remember to fill the cooler again before replacing. Mine takes about 600-800ml.
As long as its from a legit source I would think its fine. First time I bought some I was shocked my its sweet smell and did wonder if id been done. That plus I had the first batch of new package design so wondered if it was something else :Wideyed:
Just wondering whats wrong with using Silkolene?...My indie mechanic recommended that I use Pro 4 10w-40 in my 999S and thats what I've been doing for the past 3 years, any reasons not to?
A bit harsh. Castrol R has been used for many many years both for older classic British bikes and methanol burning speedway bikes. Just Googled modern R and they have a range for race engines so I don't see any reason not to except the £45 price tag. Andy
I presume the modern R40 has been modified over the years so could be a lot better for modern engines, going back to my youth ( 40 odd years ago) Castrol R was a definite no no for road bikes as it would go treacle like and goo up all the internals even blocking oilways if not changed at very regular intervals and engines regularly striped. Steve I used to add it to my petrol for the smell.
