Oil Cooler changes

  1. I understand that the post 97? oil cooler on the 900 was moved from the lower head to underneath the headstock? was this just a new bracket or was the frame altered with a welded bracket? anyone let me know as I wish to move the oil cooler (obviously I will need to get longer hoses and subsequently probably measure how much more oil is held in the longer lines and adapt accordingly) Cheers guys

  2. BB, I maybe wrong but, as far as I can make out it's the same fitting cept on the later one just upside down(?)

images are my '92 carby & my donor ssie, extra oil is negligible, plenty of 2nd hand hoses from breakers etc. 900ss.jpg IMG_2796.JPG

  3. It is a different bracket on the '97 model SS's, it's the same one used on the monsters and in WAH's second pic. Pretty sure just moving the old mount onto the top will give you clearance issues with the cooler as it will sit too high. It's an easy conversion to do, you can even make up the oil lines yourself :upyeah:

  5. image of ssie lump in carby frame, suspect you might not get away with this if using half fairing & original lower cross brace.

  6. If in doubt get the newer bracket as the mounting flange comes off flat from it as opposed to the earlier machine's casting.

Other than getting it clear of all the crap the front wheel throws up it also puts it in a better airflow as the underslung one really done bugger all other than act like a radiator since it got sod all air going through it to really make a difference.

If you do decide to mount it above the cylinder pot, try and angle it back a little to help it scavange more air.

  7. Personally I favour the lower position as it will give better airflow to the rear cylinder which is crap in the first place without a cooler.
