Oil-cooler Pipe Union Standards St2 Motors

  1. Hi, Answers to a couple of questions would help me plan what to buy in order to install an oil cooler for a 900ss transplant which came without an oil cooler, a transplant for my 600ss motor which has no oil cooler as standard. (This 600ss does have carb heater pipes, attached with banjo bolts).

    1. My motor comes with engine oil cooler feed and return pipe union adaptors which are M14x1.5 male into the drilling into the casings, and what appears to be AN-6 (I.E. 3/8 BSP/ 9/16 JIC) pipe union:
    - Is this standard?

    2. Is there a standard oil pipe union on OEM oil coolers produced for the St2 variants (SS and MOnsters, I.E. and carbs)?
    - Would that be ?

  2. I think the answer to number one is yes. But I'm not 100 percent. What I am 100 percent on is that the allot ones you get are garbage for the most part. Do NOT overtighten.

    If you find a supply of metal ones, I'd like to know, as I want them.

  3. I've had no problems using the alloy ones*, but I do also use alloy fittings on my hoses.
    Using PTF tape on the threads the unions only need nipping up.

    *I use the same fitting on my '79 900SS and little '74 250 Desmo.

  4. I use my 900ssie on track where it absolutely needs a cooler and optimised flow across it, but in previous discussions, others have expressed that in their experience the 904cc 2v aircooled belt motor is sufficiently cooled by oil flow for all road use situations without an oil cooler.

  5. It could well be me over tightening in the past, but they also corrode really easily in my experience. I have metal hose connection ends too though. The metal ones seem much better
     
  6. I second that. Brass being perhaps the best material.

    If I come across metal ones, I'll let yo know, for sure.
     
  7. I heard you suggest something similar on another post, and noted that down, but here it is more emphatic. Makes me willing to try and observe on road, beyond merely starting up. Thanks.
     
  8. To answer my own question, from information available on Ducati parts supplier lists/diagrams gained so far, M14x1.5 is the standard union for oil pipe unions to the oil coolers. No information there on the union on the casing, but as I say I measure M14.0x1.5 drilling in the case.

    Therefore, if my existing pipe feed unions on the casing are in fact M14x1.5 to AN-6 then they would be aftermarket fitted, not original I must suppose; I don't suppose Ducati would mix them on any particular bike.

    I determined that I have Metric to AN-6 because I get a measurement of the male pipe union as 14.25x 1.25mm, and not 14.0mmx1.5.
    - That 14.25mm figure accords with AN-6/3/8BSP, according to charts I consulted (no information gained yet on the standard JIC pitch).

    BTW:
    I am being calm, but these mix and match solutions have pissed me off. Nowadays I reluctantly go the long haul to determine what's what, before ordering parts, and hoping for the best. Here I am also considering possible new oil coolers, and must take their unions into account too.

    Probably the best solution is to go for JIC standards - they appear to be BSP to all extent and purpose, and for Ducati desmo, get a M14x1.5 -AN-6 or nearest size adapter, like the ones I have inherited.
    Not yet sure what AN-6 oil coolers are readily available.

  11. I've been holding off adding to this as I simply couldn't remember whose coolers I used when I made a double-cooler setup for my late 900SS for trackdays in late 90s. Post above reminded me that they were Earls - I think I got advice from Baines racing about this.

  12. Not sure if this helps but a 1098 oil cooler fits more or less straight on, including the hoses. Just need to make a bracket or modify the valve cover mount. Don't forget the oil diverter plate between engine and oil filter if fitting a cooler to an engine that didn't have a cooler previously!

    I had that cooler noted as a possibility, but what with your photo and all, it makes a decision easier.
    Especially as I don't have a cooler mount on my 904, as a previous owner had retained that cooler mount/cover.

    I like the look of your mount, handsome!


    I have the diverter plate , yes. Its in place.
