V4 Oil Drain Down To Sump Time Ppv4

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Leo167, Oct 22, 2023.

  1. Hi All.... Heard the the oil drain down time on these PPV4's takes a long time to get back in the sump to get a site glass read? So the photo below was taken after an hour of the bike sitting after a ride. the photo may look like the bike is on its side stand but it is not, it's just the way I took the photo, bike is propped straight up..... I see no oil, should I be concerned and start yelling at the dealer who did the first service or wait till the morning and check again? I did search before posting this didn't see anything relevant.

  2. If the bike is level and upright after an hour it should read correctly.
That’s exactly how mine was left after the first service and it took 3/4 litre to get the correct level.
Just had the second service and now they’ve over filled it. Not impressed.

  3. In-fuckn-credible.... This is why I prefer to do my own- unfortunately there's no means for the owners to reset the service reminder and from what I was told I need to be stay faithful with all service requirements and must be performed by an authorized dealer to stay in compliance with the 5 yr warranty that came with the bike...and yes they did say I can do the oil changes myself as long as they are Ducati products and show proof, (not even an equivalent) but I still need to bring in the bike to hook up the system and for various other checks..... At this point I might as well let them do it, coz there really is no money savings after the fact.... At first I thought great 5 yr warranty for free but... really isn't... However its 5 yrs worth of coverage and If I decide to keep this bike I think it's worth it.

  5. MTS and Streetfighter drain to sump pretty quick. Only Panigale needs a few hours.
If that's after 16hrs, it needs toping up for sure.

  7. I’ve just dropped 300ml out of mine to get back to the max mark.
Does make you wonder if they can’t get a simple oil level right, what attention is given to everything else they do?

  8. Agreed and hoping its a top off that doesn't require an entire bottle, either was the dealer needs to provide it

  9. It's these kids they hire

  10. LOL!! for sure....My last 3 bikes were BMW's this year I switched- I believe BMW threw some Bavarian Vodoo my way to punish me... but if the curse cannot be lifted, I will need to go back to BMW, life is stress free W/O the Bavarian Curse

  11. I’d guess it’ll be about 300ml, maybe 400 at a push…… just a hunch ;)

  12. Hmm? there seems to be a theme with this 300ml number ....lol
will find out tomorrow since every dealer in the Northeast is closed on Mondays

  13. Didn’t drop in level after the initial service and 7,000 miles, stayed at just under the max while on the center stand. I did wait an hour or two before checking as I noticed this showed the maximum level over several days of riding.
I’ve only ridden about 200 miles since the oil change and Easy Lift update and took a brief ride this afternoon before the weather goes south.
Today with nice warm oil, set it on the center stand and two hours later oil level barely reaches the low mark. Note - the manual says 10-15 minutes after shutting off engine for 15 minutes!?!
Gonna have a chat with the dealer in the AM.

  14. I always thought there an oil warning light when the level is too low ?

  16. Holy crap!! when are they (the technicians at the dealerships going to get it right... assuming that all depends on individual opinions across mechanics, I guess) I prefer to be on the lower side since it is easier to top off than subtract
Like tricolore said there is an oil light that will alert you if pressures are too low so I'm really not that worried since the light isn't illuminated on mine.....
Actually my concerns and anger level will depend on the level of oil needed to top off to the correct level...lol if it minimal then I'll have an extra bottle around for future top offs,,,, if I need the entire bottle (or more) then... they will absolutely hear me

  17. That's pretty much what I've experienced....except I never looked at the level after the service was done..having faith with the shop I took it to..I meant to check but just kept forgetting, no oil light so no worries?? Finally able to do so this past Sunday after a short ride.. no oil in the glass so checked again an hour or so later still no oil, figure let it sit overnight, next AM still no oil... So today, the second day the bike is just sitting....now armed 15-50 to top off with, approached the bike and long and behold there's oil in the glass, just barely touching the low mark but there is oil- mind you the site glass was bone dry just the day before- this must be some thick oil to travel so slowly
poured in oil till I hit the 800 ml mark on the bottle, guess that's like 200 ml total used to top off?

  18. I hear that, but really will +/- 200-300ml do damage? maybe more if overfilled since it will expand when hot
I'm just intrigued with how slow the oil drains back down even with the oil hot / warm

  19. Didn’t connect with the dealer today, but the Service Department was quite clear pre and post sale they ask to keep the bike overnight for an oil change to allow the oil to properly drain.

I’m wondering if the delta between low and full and drain time allowed could be the issue. For example if all of the oil hasn’t completely drained out and then filled the slight amount in the engine would result as a max fill. If left overnight or drained well after shutting the engine off a “complete” drain and then adding the same amount of oil would show as low.

Trying to give the techs a break as they may be trained to add the same amount of oil knowing doing so would avoid an overfill.

I’ve noticed when I’ve checked in the past there is a bit of increase in the level of the oil when it sits overnight, not much nor enough to make a significant change of the level.

Your absolutely correct that overfill is a bigger issue, I’m not knowledgeable enough about this specific engine, yet have seen what happens when the crank whips through the oil from an overfill in other engines on a dyno.

  20. After my 621 mile check, my '22 MTS V4 PP oil glass was just above the lower notch after sitting on the centerstand overnight. Topped-off to get to the upper notch and it stayed there until the next annual service.
