1199 Oil Filter Cover Removal

  1. I’m like buses: never around then two or more come at once!
Whilst the R is laid up awaiting water pump change completion (I’ve ordered the nipple and hose kit), I decided to do a mini service myself (oil, filters, coolant) considering all the panels are off and the fluids drained anyway.
Trying to get the oil filter cover off is proving hard. Bolts out ok but the beggar won’t budge out. It’ll rotate slightly, but now I’ve managed to fracture one of the bolt holes. New part coming soon courtesy of Motorapido. Is there something I’m doing/not? I see there are two sealing rings which must be hanging on. The cover holes are threaded for a bolt size larger. Should I try to use this to extract the blighter?

  2. Yes. That is what they are there for. Half a turn each side alternating. Check YouTube tutorials.

  3. Thanks. When I did this, one of the bolt holes snapped off. Inherent weakness? I’ll try with the one hole left intact and hope. Otherwise it’ll be down to butchery
Not that the workshop manual mentions this.

  4. Or, more correctly:-

  7. I usually move the cover round and use a flat lever to gently ease it out. It's not a good cover no matter how you do it

  8. With one bolt hole corner fractured, it should be easier to rotate now!

  9. Well, the replacement cover arrived yesterday courtesy MotoRapido, and today I extracted the badgered one and continued with my oil change. Getting the old filter out was tricky-I tried magnets, thin wire, but in the end resorted to puncturing the central part and yanking it out against the suction if the remaining oil that way.
Some previous change has made a pig’s ear of the surface-see pic. I’ve put some liquid gasket on, but as the cover has two O-rings to seal it, I don’t think there’ll be a leak.

  12. Wot he said ☝️

  13. Should be OK as the o rings seal inside filter housing and not on the outside face
