916 Oil Filter Leak..

  1. Hello.
Just wonder, after a little search on this forum, is this a common problem on 916? Just had it changed 10 miles ago (oil/filter) by the other previous owner (and he claims it never happened to him..)

There You can see the leak. Its just there when i start it up, after riding 30 minutes and stops and let the engine going, no oil leak.. Just a simple new filter needed?? Advice please :)

  2. Hi mate. They do often leak from there. Can't you nip it up a little?

  3. Thanks for advice Ian, but sorry for not so great english understanding ;) "nip it up" You mean un-tighten the filter a bit?

  4. Just make sure the filter is tight. They dont need to be very tight but obviously enough to stop any leak.As hard as you can with your hands and then a bit more, with a wrench maybe.

  5. Just the opposite, mate. As Keith said, a bit tighter.

  6. Again thanks guys. Im not a mechanic so for me it could be anything ;)
i borrowed a wrench from my 916sps-mate, obviously it was too loose, i turned it just a little bit tighter and the leaks gone.
So had to take a little trip...

  7. By coincidence I've had the same thing to one degree or another over the last couple of years in both my 600 Monster and carby 900ss. Always used Ducati filters up till last year and always did them up hand right like every other bike and car filter I've changed over the last 35 off years. Up to that point I never had any leaks but about 2 yes ago, about the time that Ducati rationalized a lot of their parts to make them generic across the range, I started having issues.

At first it was just a little dripping which tightening the filter as much as I possibly could by hand solved the issue. However, I got fed up last year and bought Hiflo HF153 filters for both bikes, fitted them hand tight as I would normally and not a drop leaked on either bike from the word go!

Bought Ducati filters this year as my bike shop didn't have the right Hiflo ones in stock and offered them to me for the same price of £8. Fitted one to the SS, warmed it up and only a tiny trip. Checked again after about 5 miles and no worse. Ride for amother 5 miles and nearly lost it on a roundabout. Stopped again obviously and oil all over back tyre and steadily dripping out!

Long story short, bought cup type filter wrench and went to tighten it up. Checked factory manual and it said 17 nm so that's what I did. Way, way more than hand tight! Leak stopped however.

Checked Haynes manual and they say 19 nm. Found that the tiny white writing on the filter body actually says 11 nm, after I'd done it of course!

Bottom line is that I reckon Ducati changes the specs of the filter or the manufacturer or both when they moved to a generic part and that one needs to be cranked up way more than you'd normally feel comfortable with. Why though is anyone's guess?

  8. The new Ducati filter is weaping on my Monster after tightening up as much as possible by hand!!!!! Time to get the wrench out....

  9. Take for pick, 11, 17 or 19 nm! Whichever, you'll find it much more than hand tight and a bit. Seems to work, but I'm expecting some swearing when I try and take it off next year!
