ok guys thought i would do an easy job on the bike today change the oil filter and new oil well........... so oil filter was a bit on the tight side rubber strap wrench in hand yep its turning threads feel tight ? then realised filter was not unscrewing just rotating............. marked side of filter turned a few times still tight feeling confirmed not winding out b*%$*^* so anybody else had this problem and which size hammer cures it lol seriously not sure how to remove this as its recessed in the engine oh bike is a 750 ss ie 99 plate
you need a right tool............and make sure its going the correct way...... they sell the tools on ebay for less than a filter....like a cup with a 3/8 drive.....
I would think this is going to be messy!I would stick a hole in the bottom of the filter to drain residual oil from filter then youll have to completely remove the canister, hammer and chisel/screwdriver/molegrip job,I would think.Hopefully this will reveal the thread bit that you can get your moleys on.
cheers guys andy tool looks like it would be easier but not really having problem turning filter think thread is damaged keith that was my thoughts didnt know if there was a particular way to attack this as not familiar with this engine hoping its the thread in filter thats damaged not on engine hmmm..............
My monster engine's filter was in so tight that it ripped apart when I tried to remove it. I made a tool that locates into the base, se this thread for details; http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f41/oil-filter-horror-3826/index2.html
turning anti clockwise as in a normal right hand thread checked replacement filter doesnt seem to be left hand thread lefty loosy righty tighty found a few damaged threads round bike so previous ownerr probably over tightned it ahh bother
I have a genuine Ducati filter removal tool...........the first time I used it on the genuine Ducati filter which had been fitted to the bike before I got it, it slipped, so it was screwdriver through the filter and since then I use the K&N filters. AL
That's exactly how mine went except the screwdriver trick just ripped the filter. The flats on the Ducati filters aren't strong enough to release a tight filter. I also use the K&N, it's just so much easier to deal with, plus they have a lockwire facility if that's important.
ok finally got round looking at the filter a bit better ended up cutting bottom of the filter after a few more attempts to remove offending item well seems the main canister of the filter is turning but the top section is not the crimped/pressed section at the top edge seems to be at fault well hopefully no damaged engine parts so next to do is make a tool to remove it at least i got an idea for that thanks to dukedesmo
I know some have removed it using a pair of needle-nosed pliers stuck into the holes and a lever between the handles of the pliers. Should be OK if the pliers are sturdy enough?
I have one of the cup type filter removers , total pants as you have to push up hard wile turning ,so the rubber mallet and big screwdriver always does the job
ok bike is still winning made a tool to fit inside of filter and tried again used 6mm bolts to to locate in filter well filter still there bolts on homemade tool sheared ..............some twat really over tightned this one so back to the drawing board tomorrow and mark 2 design it wont bloody well win lol
Having read this thread, I'm not really sure which bit is stuck in which where.......... If its any help, the filter screws onto a threaded nipple (thats what the parts manual calls it) which has flats on it, so a socket can be used to remove that when the filter is out of the way....... .......if the main body of the filter has ripped off and top of the filter is stuck on the nipple, then what is needed is a pair of sturdy long nose pliers and a long ring spanner........get the ring spanner slid up one of the pliers legs (not too far up) and stick the pliers nose/ends through the holes in the remaining disc of the filter........put some decent gloves on then use the ring spanner to lever against the other leg of the pliers........the disc should come away fairly easily.......it might even bring the nipple with it, but make sure you tighten the nipple anyway before you fit a new filter. AL
cheers for the advice guys but .............THE BLOODY THING IS OFF  wooo ha not going to let a dam bike beat me yet lol so to recap i wasnt sure aat first what was stuck /loose well the main body of the canister was turning at the crimped edge where the threaded top section with a series of holes for oil flow is attached mk 2 of the tool i made worked quite well although the force needed to loosen the filter was still more than it should of needed cheers though guys for the advice and the pics of a home made tool which was a great idea now time for a drink lol ducati oil filter service kit
