Oil filter socket

  1. Anyone know the size of the oil filter 'flats' - I'd like to get a socket type tool for removal and refitting - also does anyone know the torque setting for the oil filter?

    Cheers

  2. OK - I've found out the torque settings (10-12 Nm) so just need to know the size of the 'socket' please

  3. Don't worry I'm not going to!

Last service done at 7500 - bike now done about 11k - I had been starting the bike up very infrequently over winter - no problems - 2 weeks ago I take the bike for it's first run out and after about 10 miles I meet my mates. One of them says to me what are those oil drips below your bike? I thought he was taking the piss but sure enough there was a few drops on the tarmac and what seemed like a lot on the sump guard - took the guards off and came to the conclusion it was coming from the oil filter - we did manage to tighten it up a bit by hand and I've had no further leaks.

    So you have been warned....

  4. Blimey!! Good job it was spotted!

Ill check mine myself after my nxt service

  5. Of late I've seen and had 1st hand experience of genuine duc oil filters not sealing properly at the recommended torque settings. it seems the quality control isnt all it could be and it appears that the filter bottoms before the oil seal is fully home. I've had the problem on 3 separate ducatis over recent years and seen others reporting the same, some of mine were on bikes that previously didnt leak at the filter. I recently swapped to using a K&N oil filter and the issue disappeared. So if your finding it needs significant torque to get the oild filter to seal its not you its the crappy oem duc filter (which is a shame as I'd normaly say oem everytime).
PS the factory must be aware but do nothing as when I tried to change the oil filter on my 999 (long since sold) to put my prefered oil in (the filter had never been off since its dealer 1st service) it was on so tight that I had to resort to a pipe wrench to undo it and the replacement leaked like a sieve until overtighened.

  11. I picked one off ebay for about £6 including postage

makes life a lot easier than other means of removing filters, but unless you and a tool for every variation of flute numbers you are pretty much restricted to the same supplier of filters

  12. £5.99 + £1.99 p&p cheapest I can see listed so....

....I better reduce that to £7 all in for anyone that wants it :)
