On the way home from work after a night shift this morning on the severn bridge in torrential rain, the oil light came on temporarily. I killed the motor and coasted off the bridge, I had a look around for leaks and checked the level, all seemed well, re-started the engine and the oil light was dimmer, the motor sounded fine so I took a chance, only 1 mile from home, and assumed the oil light was effected by the weather/wet and a hundred yards or so later the oil light gradually dimmed to nothing. Anyone else experiance this? Mine is a 2006 classic gt1000 with the two valve ms motor.
Fingers crossed it's just the oil pressure switch, used to be a common fault I went through a few in a matter of months until I found one that worked, but it could also be a sign for bigger issues. Obvious check the wiring, could be a short from the rain after that if it's running OK I'd be tempted to swap the switch as it's easy and cheap, if you still have issues take it to a dealer
The oil pressure switches are quite a regular failiure and an inexpensive fix, so hopefully that's what this is, also torrential rain can sometimes cause the electrics to do strange things with these bikes. By the way are you using anything to protect the wheels if you're using it over the winter?
as above - there are two types, one with two wires and one with a single wire. The latter is an earth return and it's possible the damp has aided it to power up.
my monster s2r 800 does this when it gets wet, unplug and douse the connector with wd40 to flush out the moisture you might also want to pull the sheath back from the oil pressure switch to see if the wire has become exposed. if it has use some amalgamating tape to repair it
Left this thread and have just got down from the workshop, rebuilding a vile old en500 custom to move on, yuck. Sorry, classic middleweight cruiser if anyone is interested? While up in the garage I had a prod about with the gt. Any plugs or connectors wiggled and jiggles, any plugs into the crankcases unplugged and reconnected. No further evidence of any issues, the engine was running at the time BTW, I used a stethoscope and couldnt hear any rumbles or rattles. I was surprised how long this takes to warm up, its not that cold yet, but, the dash flashes low temp for between 6 and 8 miles until the 50 degrees marker is reached. I havent had a duke for years, choosing to far far superior motoguzzis in more recent years so had forgotten about these things quirks. Last question, she is a bitch to ride in traffic, anything under 3k and I get a bit concerned about chain wear due to her being a little snatchy, again, is this common? My 1150 Rockster smoothed out once I had removed the cats and reached 10,000 miles, Guzzis also settle at the 10k mark, Im assuming the GT will be similar being a lumpy Aircooled Twin, is that the case in your opinion? The gt has just reached 3000 miles. Had a good laugh on the way home yesterday morning, approx 06:50 HRS under the Aztec West roundabout I noticed a 916/748/996??? behind me, rubmling pipes and noisy clutch gave it away. I tootled up onto the M5 at a steady 50ish, upon reaching the long left hander I gassed her in 4th up to 7500rpm and up through the box, reached about 85 with her cranked right over, in the rain, and the big reddun was nowhere to be seen, I shut her down to have a good look behind and he came past me WELL into three figures, sounded fantastic but was aware that he was making a point. Gotta Laugh eh?
Im a bit late in the season really, but, just finishing a DR650 rs as a winter commuter, I have to BUILD a stainless exhaust system to finish her which is proving a little daunting so dont plan on too much winter work for her, once the salt is down, her and the cally, thats the solo as I also have a cally outfit, willbe laid up for only the clearest days. I also have an old xj900f shafty which I may drag out should I not finish the DR in time. When the weather gets too rough, I use this.................
The GT is seriouly overgeared, a 14 th front sprocket will help it in traffic and there is a device called the fat Duc eliminator that apparently smooths it right out. Worth a Google.
