I sensibly fitted the water radiator guard from new but not an oil rad guard. Following my last trip I noticed a stone had dinked the rad and taken some paint off. I decided a simple solution was called for. I bought some aluminium mesh for £6.99 (enough for several guards). I cut it oversize in height, sprayed it matt black (UHT paint). After a few minutes to dry, I found that I could fold the mesh (3 folds) slide in in through one of the beak nostrils and into the right location. Then straighten it as I pushed it up as high as it would go. I tucked the excess under the rad as a foot and then bent the overlap at the top LH/RH ends. All done in about 15 mins including one abortive attempt when I had cut it too short for the folds. It should give good protection, looks likely to stay in place and I can easily fit another at a later date if needed. I think it also looks fine. Note - you can see the stone paint chip shining through!

Looks good but still looks grey, are these the photos of the painted version? Did you take any measurements of the cut version? It'll make it easier for us followers to get it right first time Cheers.
Must be an ipad thing. can see the pics now on the laptop.... Looks good...and a low cost solution....great! Can you get the alu mesh at any diy store?
Yes the photos were taken after paint sprayed on so not sure how well it took onto the mesh. It looks fine (and blacker) though in real life. You should be able to find the mesh on Ebay but loads of different ones on offer. This is the one I used: ALUMINIUM RACING GRILLE MESH VENT CAR RACE TUNING GRILL Size - No measurements taken but cut it about 30-40mm oversize in height for the "foot" return at base and small overlap at top to hold in place.
Yep, I did this on my Monster 796 took 15 mins cost a fiver and stopped all those stones and wasps from denting up the rad.
I done the same on my 848,I bonded mine to the back of the plastic intake cowl using a strong black silicone type glue I got from a bodyshop.well worth doing.
