1260 Oil Thirst

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by freshage, Oct 30, 2022.

  1. I've been on the road for just over a week now, done about 4,000 kilometres since last Sunday. Been checking the bike daily when it's put up for night and noticed its using oil a fair bit. It had a service when I bought it (collected a few days before my trip) and the oil was just above the first marker. Now it's slightly below. Granted I've had some very spirited rides and long motorway stints the past week. Got one more week left hence I'm being a bit cautious.

2 questions, is this normal oil consumption and which oil do ducati dealerships put in? Gonna top her up tomorrow.

  2. For the 1260 the reported limit of oil consumption before Ducati recognise a fault = 1L per 1800 miles (3000 km) limit although they use weights rather than volumes and won’t quote limits.
Mine used 480 ml per 1800 miles or 1L per 3,750 miles when I first got it but that decreased over time and now it’s got 15,000 miles on the clock doesn’t use much at all UNLESS taken on long motorway hauls then it goes up noticeably.

  3. Oil consumption is highly variable. Long trips on the highway with highway speed cause a significant consumption. Up to .5l/1000km. Normal or spirited riding results in minimal oil consumption. Overall I need to put in 1-1.5 l between services.

  4. Mine used 0.5L over 2500 mile trip this year.
It’s been like that since new

  5. Oil recommended is is 15W 50 Shell Advance 4T fully synthetic although my dealer now uses Motul 7100 4T 15W-50 fully synthetic as it’s slightly cheaper and fully meets requirements

  6. This is exactly what I found when I had a 1260

  7. Mine uses oil. A lot of oil. Ducati have had it in twice but assure me it is fine. My calculation is approx 450 mls per 1000 miles.
When they weighed it they said it had hardly used any, despite the oil level dropping considerably in the sight glass. It was just below upper limit and had dropped to below bottom line.

  8. Cool, thanks all. I topped it up yesterday as I did a 12 hour stint home. I put in about 0.5lr of 10w50 4t (couldn't get 15w50)

Gonna change the oil my self tomorrow anyway as I've done over 4k km's in a week. So it won't hurt.

  9. I also think some of the issues could be caused in having the bike consistently level when checking. I’ve never really used much oil on any of my 3 Multistradas

  10. Could be, but this is also my 3rd MTS, 1200, 1260 and then this 1260 and none of the previous used this much. However, the last 1260's only big trip was to the Black forest for a long weekend.

  11. I don’t think the difference between the high and low marks on the glass is much at all. I have it in my head someone once told me it’s 250ml but can’t remember where I heard that.

  12. I thought I read somewhere on this forum that it was about 1 litre!

  13. Mine uses quite a bit if using on motorway stints at constant spirited speeds, hardly any when honking about the countryside. I've had inconsistency with the sightglass, some reckon because the DVT uses oil that sometimes some is kept within the system and sometimes not, I have no idea if there's any truth in it but I keep a close eye on consumption now, never had to with any other bike.

  14. My 1260 PP over the last 18,000 miles is using 250ml per 1000 miles which I believe is within spec

  15. Yes, I was told by a dealer unofficially that the spec limit in weight as measured equates to approximately 1L per 1800 miles before Ducati HQ recognise a fault, so that would make yours well within spec ...and about the same as my 1260 PP (that has done 15K miles), depending on riding conditions.

  16. Just t
Just realised Nozzer that’s about twice as much as mine depending on conditions but still well within the limits and they are all different

  17. My 1260 PP used c 800ml in 3,500 miles on a recent trip down to the Algarve; however, not in a linear fashion.

Consumption was noticeably higher when enjoying the D933/N135 between St Jean Pieds-de-Port and Pamplona :)

  18. Yep , a great tyre shredder that one , good on a loop down and back up , it’s a great road . The Col de Nargo is the best as it’s deserted .
