Hi I have a 2018 1260s and it uses oil at the rate of half a litre every 1000 miles or so is this usual ?
Hi Alan Your poll needs some tweaking to make sense. I have the same bike/same year. Initially it drank oil at a ferocious rate but I then found I had a leak from the timing layshaft oil seal behind the pulleys between the V for the timing belts. Dealer fixed that under warranty and it reverted to similar to yours for a while at worst*, seems to have improved as mileage has increased, now at around 22,000 miles. * find that worst oil consumption is belting along the motorway/autoroute which I usually only do on tour and on first and last days as required. Once on the twisty stuff it's not as bad. Have learnt to pack a spare litre when on tour and check every morning whilst away. I have a small collapsible silicone funnel that I bought in a garage, that I keep in a tough zip-loc bag, in my top case. This fits/wedges perfectly in the oil filler neck and makes topping up a little far easier and less messy. You can get them off of eBay and Amazon too. There is a threshold for oil consumption that Ducati deem as acceptable, IIRC 0.5l in 1,000 miles was inside this.
Interesting. My 2015 1200 DVT used about 0.5ltr per thousand miles too, sometimes more, with the same usage pattern as Bumpkin. I now have a 2018 1260 but with only one longish trip to Wales I haven't been able to establish if and how much oil it uses. In May I'm off the the Pecos and Portugal, and that will give me a clearer idea. I also take a litre and a funnel with me.
Thanks for your replies Bumpkin and Coman. So it seems about right. I also off to Pecos and Portugal at the end of April into May and plan to do about 4000 miles total so will take 2 liters of oil just incase. I have just obtained a silicone funnel. My 1260s has just reached just over 23000 miles with full service at 18000. So i will have the yearly service etc carried out before the trip. Enjoy your trip and ride safe Coman.
Must admit that I haven't, that I recall, created one on here. You probably need to edit your original post (first one in this thread), click 'more options' and then scroll to the bottom. If it is possible to go back in and edit the poll it should be there along with the question and the two choices you've added, both of which currently say 'all'... The question doesn't make much sense (as a question) and two choices the same... Maybe a mod can provide some guidance? @Ducbird
I have never had to top up oil on my 1260s, after a 4000 mile trip across Europe in 2022 (last big tour on it) the sump was just as full as when I left. my k1300s on the other hand drinks a litre or so every 2k, so about the same rate here. I am working on the assumption that the piston rings are not sealed due to the first owner riding it like a scooter but nothing I can do about it
