1200 One Month Into Ownership....

  1. and still loving it!!

    Picked up my 2013 Multistrada a month a go and managed just 800 miles this month with it mostly commuting and a little introduction to the wife who is also loving being pillion.

    Few teething problems (User error, not the bikes fault) but starting to feel more comfortable with the significant increase in power from my last bike...

    One thing that puzzles me....

    I understand the fuel tank is 21L?

    I am getting around 120 / 140 miles before the light comes on and then i am only managing to get around 12 / 14 L in... does 7 / 9 L reserve sound right?

    I know gauges are very inaccurate but so what sort of distance to tank are you getting?

    Also, when i refuel i shut everything down. once i start up again it can take more than 20 miles for the gauge to read full and the light to go off.. is this normal?

    Can anyone suggest where i can get an official Ducati Toolkit from? i believe they are supposed to have one under the rear seat but mine is missing, would like to try and track down an official one if i can?

  2. Buy a 2L fuel container (nippynormans); stick it in top-case or a bag. Run the bike till its coughs & splutters its final mile. I do this fairly regularly on my enduro to keep a good idea of my tank range & helps keep the estimate range computer in check.

  3. Sounds like the fuel gauge sensor is faulty. A very common fault on this model. Usually Ducati will replace the probe under a good will gesture, but you will need a Ducati dealer to fit it. (about £130)
     
  4. I used to get 145 ish to reserve light and it would register full after about 2 minutes of riding. Yours sounds like it might be on its way out.

    Oddly enough it's the only part of mine that never went wrong
     
  5. thank you. will have a chat with the dealer as they did warranty it.. not a massive deal but worth looking at....

    i am a little reluctant to post this as i know there are a lot of track lovers on this forum but here goes.....

    i have absolutely no desire to get my knee down or set any lap records but i would like to understand the bike better at higher speeds and what it can dod to help me when i am on the road.

    Somewhat daunted by the prospect of a track day for all the potential damage and expense but are there any operators who provide track time and tuition on own bikes to improve my riding skills in a safer environment?
     
  6. Plenty of novice only track days (one coming up at brands soon). I've only done a couple of trackdays but the fear of dropping the bike disappears after about a lap and a half.

    In the novice group, I've never had any qualms or any altercations with other riders.

    I would highly recommend the ohlins mechatronic unit if you have the S model. It transformed the suspension at high speed. Magic witchcraft!

  7. Yeah my fuel gauge used to be a bit slow after filling up until the update I got with my 15k miles service done.

    I normally fill the bike up in the upright position and as it reaches the brim let it settle and fill it really slow until it's just below the little hole in the front of the filler tube. My light comes on at 2 bars, I get another 40 miles once the light has come on, totalling around 170 - 180 mile depending on how hard I ride. after that the most I've ever managed to get in at fill up is 19.45 litre using the fill method above.
    I normally reset my first trip counter every time I fill up and just refill at 150 miles whether the light comes on or not. I'd say on average I get around 14 - 15 litres in at 150 miles re fuel.

    My fuel gauge is the same. Takes ages for light to go out and the gauge to show full after filling up. I'm not used to having a fuel gauge anyway , so trip meter for me each time.
    I will get new sender though at some point.
    I too love the bike. It just eats the miles.

    Unfortunately only rode mine for a week before having to return to work , but managed just under 1000 unforgettable miles in that time.

    Tried filling whilst on the centre stand today. The light had just come on after 140 miles. Got 14L in. Have always used the trip counter on bikes so will keep a close eye on the next few tanks...
     
  10. My fuel gauge has become somewhat random of late. However, I track mileage from fill to fill and, unless very heavy with the right hand, can routinely get 180 mile range. Trouble is, psychologically, it's difficult to ignore the light even though you know it's rubbish...

  11. Your fuel sender is knackered mate as you have described exactly what mine would do time after time. I even got to the extent on my trip to Norway with a mate last year we had to plan fuel stops about 150 -160 miles maximum which in the more remote parts wasnt easy to find places.

    Replaced the sender on my return and now works perfectly with me refuelling at about 175 miles when on my boring 54 miles a day commute (51 mpg at 70 -80 max) .....both pictures using fuel from same station, same ride mode, same riding manner
