Ladies/Gents, I'm new to the forum, new to ducati (just bought the 999 in my profile pic and new to DIY on machines. However, after reading a 'how to' online about changing the pressure plate and cover (I read this one http://www.ducati.ms/forums/80-hall...sure-plate-open-cover-installation-guide.html I think it's something I can tackle myself rather than hand the bike over to someone and be charged! Firstly, do you think I am right in my assumption? Or is it not as easy as it sounds?? Are there any tricky bits I may come across during removal/installation? Secondly, some questions... A) when changing the plate for an aftermarket one, what length springs do you use?? Do they differ from plate to plate? How can you calculate the correct ones?? As I will be buying the plate only (not a kit) but have heard you should change to SS springs to stop corrosion as the plate will now be exposed...I will also need to know where to source these springs (and coloured collars) B) I'm thinking of buying from china/Hong Kong as the design (but especially the price) is somewhat appealing... Any comments on getting a product from there?? I know I may have to pay import tax, more concerned about the quality... Also thinking of changing the clutch and brake levers, again buying from HK. I've actually heard good things about these, but again wanted the opinion of some more learned minds than my own on this. Are these simple to fit/change over from the standard??? Finally, the colour scheme I'm thinking of is Red pressure plate with gold open cover and red 'collars' (screw tops) And gold levers with little adjuster on top in red Think it will look the bees knees Anyway, your technical input would be much appreciated, particularly on the springs question
Springs should be all the same if you are just talking pressure plate change. You can either keep the standard steel or change to blingy, shiny stainless. Make sure if changing springs you get the correct ones, Ducati have 2 different strengths, they changed around the 1098. Changing the plate is an absolute dawdle. http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f16/show-us-yer-clutch-16100/ This should give you a clue about what's on offer out there
The jobs you want to do are a easy as they look. As for stuff from HK I have levers and rearsets that I have been using fr the last couple of years. I have just bought a spare set of clip ons and flip up footpegs as my existing ones were not flip up. Again cant fault the quality, no doubt the doom mongers will be along soon to tell you you must buy Rizoma or Pazzo. In the last few years the levels of manufacturing competition in China has gone up so they have had to up the game in quality and customer service.
Cheers pal, How can I calculate which springs I will need? Does it depend on the bike I have or the pressure plate? Or both? Thanks in advance
The springs depend on the bike model nothing more. All the different pressure plates all use the same springs. So no matter which blingy pressure plate you get you can just use your originals or get an SS set. If going SS here is a listing for the 999 type springs in SS. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CTMOTO-ty...pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item53ebad7bb6 I got the type 2 from the same guy for my 1098 and was very pleased. There are only 2 types Type 2 for 1098, 1198, Streetfighter, Monster 1100DS, Hypermotard 1100DS & Desmosidici Type 1 for all the other models. Hope that makes it a bit clearer. John
cheers for all the help all! it really was as simple as you all mentioned! Only tricky bit was lining up the pressure plate correctly as my plate didnt have any markings on it at all!... Trick was (if your plate has no markings) to look very carefully as you place the pressure plate onto the clutch plates...the correct position is when the 6 posts are DEAD centre in each of the holes...try a few positions out and you will see what I mean.
