1098 Overheating?

  1. Hi All,

I picked up a an 07 1098, 15K miles at the start of the month and had issues with it struggling to start and sounding "rough" "spluttering" when running. Went back to garage as under warranty and after a week they said the fitted new crank sensor after various calls to Ducati.
It seems to start better. I have just received it back and now noticed that when I just leave it in garage idling, it will just cut out after about say 7 mins. All electrics, lights are still on. It's as if someone just hit the kill switch. I then fire it back up and then it cuts out a lot faster. I only need to let it run a few mins. I notice the right hand side of the bike is violently hot when it cuts out. I don't remember it getting this hot when letting it idle for a while before it went to the garage.
Anyone have any idea? I have had the bike out 3 times since I got it due to having nothing but trouble. I'm worried it will just cut out when I'm at speed. Obviously going to have to go back to shop under warranty but man this is getting ridiculous.
    End Rant
    Cheers

  2. The early models (07 ish) had faulty rads, there are a few threads here on the issue. Have you checked yours is full, aswell as the expansion tank?

Also what is the temp on the dash right before it cuts out?

  3. Are the fans coming on?

  4. The dash doesnt seem to show the temp. I did look for this on the menus while it was running, but nothing temp wise showing. Only temp I see is before I start it up is the air temp..
Regarding the radiator...will need to look through manual on how to do this. Not very mechanical with bikes but not afraid to ger stuck in. Simple enough to check? I already have both fairings off. Bike also seems to have no oil since coming back.

  5. Fans not coming on at all before it cuts out. I have checked them and they spin freely when I move them with fingers. I read it is possible they can catch on something, but doesn't seem to be the case

  6. If it doesn't have any oil. It will run v hot, then seize up.

  7. Bottom right of the dash, below the air temp.

    Where do you live mate?

  8. I wonder if it was drained when it was in and forgot to fill it again... Will call tomorrow and get some oil in the meantime!

  9. I'm in Aberdeen buddy. I'll fill up with oil first before letting it run again...see how she goes.

  10. Oh, bit far from me. :)

Sounds like the oil issue. Fill it then check that temp bottom right, it should say lo until the bike gets warm.

  11. Thanks! Will keep you posted. What oil do you recommend in the 1098? Try and pick up some tomorrow

  12. Any oil is better than no oil.
    Preferably fully synthetic 10w40.
Sounds like a nightmare scenario though tbh. An engine started with no oil then run till it seizes is almost certainly seriously damaged IMHO.
    Hope I'm wrong.
The people who worked on it will be fully liable though.
Not sure I'd trust the same people to rebuild the engine. I'd want it rebuilt by an expert while they pay.

  13. Im just going to leave it with no oil and call them tomorrow. I want to leave the bike exactly as they dropped it off so there are no questions. I would have assumed when I bought the bike from them 3 weeks ago all the fluids etc.. would have been checked, along with the oil. They even MOTd it for me. Went through a 21point check whatever that entails. The bike has not gone more than 45miles since I received it and been in garage a week getting fixed...and now this. 2 month left on warranty. I just want my money back now tbh.

  14. Are you checking the oil on the side stand? It should be upright to give an accurate reading.
    Steve

  15. I was pulling the bike up level off the stand. Just thinking, should my oil pressure light not have come on while I had it idling for those 7/8mins if the oil is empty. Is there a way to check if there is actually any oil at all, even a small amount?

  16. as above plus I think you would notice if the oil light didn't go out

  17. You
You could try leaning the bike to the right but you really don't want to drop it...

  18. Should my fan be kicking in if i leave my bike idling until extremely hot? Any advice on checking fuse for fan? Is this located beside battery compartment?
Has anyone tested leaving their bike idling for 7/8 mins to see if/when then fan kicks in?

  19. yes, that's what you would do normally but you need to find temperature reading on instrument to ensure you turn off if it's running hotter than approx 105 centigrade/221 fahrenheit. If you are going to sit in traffic a lot then might be worth fitting a manual override switch.

  20. Your owners manual should tell you how to access the engine temperature.
The 999 switches the fans on sequentially.
The first one comes on at about 101c and if that doesn't control the temperature, the second one comes in at about 103c.
If the engine is never allowed to get hot, it will never boil off water that's got into the oil via condensation, so you really shouldn't worry too much about the temperature rising this high.
The combination of pressurisation of the cooling system and the 50/50 mix of water and coolant means that your engine coolant won't boil until approaching 130c, so don't get really worried if the coolant temp rises to 120 or 125 even, fully synthetic oil can cope with that.
If the coolant was drained, it's possible that you have an airlock in the cooling system, which would prevent it from working efficiently.
The nightmare scenario though is no oil.
