1199 Oz Wheel Bearing Removal Help

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Markmc, Jan 27, 2019.

  1. Can anyone advise, how to remove the front wheel bearings from my panigales OZ racing front wheel.
I've removed the dust seals, and one side had a large circlip, which I've removed.
I can't see anyway of getting a drift onto the back of the bearings.
Just fancied a colour change while I'm replacing the tyres.
    Pics below, thanks.

  2. Tap it out from the other side - the spacer is a bigger diameter than the bearing - bearings need renewing of course...

  3. There is usually a notch in the inner spacer tube to allow a drift to contact the bearing.

  4. You need a blind bearing puller

  5. No notch, checked that.

  6. Can't get in either side to tap the other side out.
May need a puller as suggested.

  7. That's the proper way, dam you with your professionalism

  8. Your second picture looks like you can

  9. Get a raw bolt. Tighten it to expand in the bore.
Knock bearing out with a drift from opposite side.

Not sure what size you need, probably 10 or 12mm. Should cost about a quid.

  10. 10-12mm? Think the wheel spindle is more than that.

  11. They expand. Ok...maybe 18 or 20mm. The one I bought in 1985 was for a Suzuki GSX750 so maybe I’m a bit out of date!

  12. Ooo such class Ricky, yes a rawbolt will do the same job. Well recommended.:upyeah:

  13. Quite proud that I worked that out for myself as a stoned 23 year old ! Probably one of my significant life achievements!

  15. The spacer should float up and down slightly, to give access to the back of the bearings.

  16. Nope, no movement.
Spacer almost flush with the bearings, no chance of tapping from behind.
Gonna need some kind of puller I think.
Or I might just change the tyres and leave the wheels alone, if I can't borrow a puller.
    Cheers all.

  17. Pull the seals out and run a mig weld around the ball/cage. That will shrink the OD of the bearing.

  18. If there was a circlip fitted. It may be possible to drift out both the bearings and spacer from one side, through to the circlip side. (If the bearing sits up to an outer shoulder on one side of the wheel)

  19. Your picture 2 clearly shows the spacer has dropped allowing the bearing to be tapped out from behind...not as clear on this smaller picture but check your first post :eyes:

  20. I think it's the angle I've took the pic, it makes it look like that.
I've been back in the garage, and the spacer is almost flush with the bearing.
I've tried to tap the back with a drift, but can't get any purchase on it, it just slips out. (Not enough of a lip to hit)
I will give it another go in morning.
    Thanks.
