Painful Coccyx

  1. Ok I'm getting a bit worried, I've just finished running in my Multistrada S GT.
I've been out on it about 5 times now including the trip home from the dealers. But each time I get off the bike. I can't sit down on the sofa because my coccyx it that sore.

Have any of you had the same problem?

I'm intending to go touring next year but if this is how it's going to be every time a do a few miles I'm screwed. I know the GT is meant to have an extra comfy seat but when I took it off to have a look under it, it was only about 30mm thick, so I'm not sure if they made a mistake in the factory?

  2. Several types of air inflatable seat covers are available in various price ranges, including Allyn and AirHawk. I've got one made by
    DebbonAir® Motorcycle Seat Pad Range
I find it is worth using for long rides, but gives you a slightly wobbly feeling during spirited cornering. May I suggest you give one a try?

  3. Yes, was even worse on the old multi. I tend to move my ass back so I'm hunched more, as it takes pressue off my spine. The problem is (for me) more because off all the weight sitting thru my lower back and not being sprad. I drive a car very reclined too. Dont think the low seat helps either as its vibey

  4. +1 on the Airhawk seat cushion. They look expensive but honestly it is the best money you can ever spend on a motorcycle and the only thing that really works. Gel seats etc just don't come close. Wish I had bought one years ago (especially for that 1150 mile journey back from Austria in 2009...ouch!)

  5. I've been looking at getting one of these, Saddlemen Adventure Track Seat Ducati Multistrada. Any one else got one?

  6. I had this problem when I bought a couple of cruisers - both involved sitting directly on the coccyx
Most uncomfortable bikes I have ever ridden and exacerbated by feet being forwards too. Could manage 20 mins in saddle tops and ended up with numbness and sciatic pain in bum and legs
Tried everything - nothing worked - eventually got rid
I now have an ST amongst other stuff - that involves me reaching forwards a little and have no pain whatsover
    Hope you have better luck

  7. Having previously ridden an Aprilia Tuono the seat on the Multi feels like a overstuffed leather couch to me. On long trips I used to wear cycling shorts under my leathers which helped a lot.

Maybe try changing the foot pegs and bar position to tilt you forward a little more?

  8. I hear what your saying, I put 18k on an 04 R1 and only ever had sore wrists and knees, I'm a bit shocked and worried how uncomfortable I get on the Multi, I did 115 miles yesterday and honestly couldn't sit down normally until this morning.
I'm sticking with the multi I just spent over £17k on it.
I don't mind getting a better seat but I'm not sure I'll find one for a 2014 model, all the seats I can find are for 2010, 11 and 12.
any one know if the 2013/14 GT seat is any different?

  9. Right had a word with Russ at DMC Moto while I was booking my first service.
He said the GT seat is the Ducati comfort seat and that in 2013 they shortened the pillion seat by 25mm to give the rider more room.

He has suggested trying the bike with out the bar risers to see if it will lean me forward a bit more and take the load off my coccyx. he kindly said they will do it during my first service if I like. so sounds like a plan.
Failing that he said he sometimes uses a guy in Wigan that re upholsters seats, he may be able to remove some foam in the center of the seat or build up the outer with gel or both.

  10. Russ is a sound bloke, I took my hyperstrada from him earlier this year, very helpful.

  11. Definitely try moving the bars or try some adjustable footpegs.to try and relieve the pressure point on your coccyx

I used to get pain in my knees, but after fitting these and moving my feet a little further back, it was much better

  12. I had exactly the same problem when I bought the fuglystrada a couple of years back. Got home from picking the bike up (about 50 miles) and I could barely walk. Same next day, a short ride followed by much pain. But the solution is simply to stick with it. You don't need expensive replacement parts, you just need to give your butt time to adapt, and adapt it will. Trust me.

  13. I've just been looking at the bar risers, I think they must have changed them on the 2014 model there solid with a little rubber insert under them, I cant see how he can take them off with out getting a set off bar clamps of a std model.

I think I may have solved a bit of the problem. The only touring pants I could find to fit me were Akkito, they have 4 layers.
The outer pants with a leather arse sheet, the inner breathable mesh, the waterproof layer with double stitched and taped seems and last but by no means least the inner thermal layer.

in total that's 5 seams all up the crack of my butt when I'm riding.
The wife and I have just carried out our own trial on the coffee table and to tell the truth as soon as I sat on it it brought back the discomfort from my last ride out.

I've taken the removable thermal layer and water proof layer out and I'm going to see if it makes any difference tomorrow on my 140 mile round trip for my first service.
    Wish me luck.

  14. Interesting - we all tend to focus on the ergonomics of the bikes as being the problem, but sometimes it's as simple as the riding kit. I had a similar problem with sore knees which I couldn't get to the bottom of, as I hadn't changed the bike and the MTS is hardly the most cramped of knee positions.

After a lot of messing about I realised that the knee armour in my Rukkas had gradually worked its way lower over the years - not enough to be noticeable and not enough to be a problem on shorter rides either. I just thought my knees were getting old until I happened to go out for a long ride with an old pair of troons on and the problem went away.

Quick fiddle with the armour in the knee pockets has solved the problem, so fingers crossed yours is a similarly easy (and free) solution...

  15. I am having the same problem only difference is mine started a year ago after a European trip on a BMW k1600gt. Just seen specialist says very hard to treat One thing he did say was possible manipulation through an opening I don't want a mans fingers ! So it was basically put up with it I have tried various things but moving my position on seat before it gets too bad is the best advice I can give.
Hope you have better luck than me

  16. Well I'm back, I've done a total of 170 miles today, Had a blat round north Yorkshire on my way back from the service. I have to say, although the problem hasn't totally gone by taking out all the layers in my pants, it has certainly improved some what.
I could still feel a bit of pressure on my Coccyx but nowhere near as bad as it was. I'm a very happy chappy tonight, it's been getting me down to the point I didn't want to go out on her. BUT NOW I cant wait for the weather to clear up.
I'm still going to look for a comfort seat but I'm not in a rush.

Of course the down side is my legs were very cold today riding through the lake district this morning the *Ice warning kept popping up on my clocks and all the fields were white... it was very Christmassy

Also what an absolute BEAST these bike's are. now that I can take her over 6k rpm she's got a totally different character....AWESOME!

  17. Ever get the feeling you're talking to yourself?

  18. You must have a strong coffee table...

  19. Who said that?

  20. Glad to hear your feeling better about your bike. When I first got mine in Sept after the first couple of rides my first impressions was this bike was going to be awesome, but was not sure about the seat. Thought it was a bit hard. Anyway now done 2000 miles and find the seat really comfortable. I think its a combination of getting used to the bike, riding more relaxed and my arse and seat getting to know each other. So put some miles on her and then see if a change is required. A mate of mine swears by padded cycling shorts, might be worth a try. Bloody awesome bike!
