1260 Paint Damage To Frame Of New Bike

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by 999nutta, Sep 27, 2020.

  1. So at the beginning of September i picked up my new 1260 GT.
The following day I noticed paint damage to the frame where the crash bobbins had been installed (dealer fitted). This was then much worse when they were removed (dealer)
I am not here to debate the rights or wrongs of how the damage occurred but more the thoughts and opinions of my options.
I love the bike and just want it to be repaired properly.
My main concern is that as annoying (very) as it is cosmetically, it is on the frame of the bike and may prove a problem further down the line.
Now the bike has been repaired and i am due to collect it next week so haven't had a chance to inspect it. I only have a photo to go from.
The dealer has been very supportive so far, so this post is mainly to ask what to look for and questions to ask etc.
To be honest i am hoping it will be as good as factory standard, as it should be on a brand new bike.
Bottom picture is the repaired frame.

  2. What make of Bobbins? I had R&G on my multi and they certainly didnt tighten up against the frame.

  3. Evotech. They are aware of the problem

  4. Very much looks like it’s been painted over rust, I would question the dealer whether this was taken back to clean metal before painting.
I would also contact Ducati UK to report the problem in case of any future problems.

  5. Mine are Evotech, been on over two years, no such damage, it just doesn't look right that damage!

  6. As in?
The dealer has explained and showed me how it has been caused.

  7. it's hard to say, but does look that way and starting to remind me of something. Just a long shot, but components could have been standing longer than usual before painting due to Covid.

@RainDanceKid has a paint damage mystery also which I suggested as possible same (literally) underlying cause when he first posted.

  8. I'm sorry if this might upset a few people on here, but if i was buying a new motorcycle with my hard earned wages and it had that problem i would have rejected it immediately without hesitation.

  9. The steel frame underneath the 'displaced' paint should not be black-looking. It looks corroded to me. Looks like the bobbin has been tightened down onto poorly-adhering, over-thick paint...

  10. Agreed - the R&G ones I have on my Diavel don't tighten up against the exterior of the frame and have a cosmetic plastic insert (tube) to fill the gap between bobbin and frame.
On my Multi (1200 DVT) I had crash bars rather than bobbins.

  11. I can't look at my bike at the moment, it's in the dealers, I cannot remember when fitting they touched the exterior of the frame, just looked at the Evotech website and fitting instructions for these parts, it would be possible to try fit them the wrong way round E38EE803-237A-4C39-A979-2A9FBEC18C8B.png

  12. Can you tell me if part A fits on left or right please. Thank you

  13. This looks like part A, but fitted to left side

  14. :( That 'final' paint repair doesn't look that well done to me, even with a pretty basic photograph like that.
I would insist that unless they can categorically verify and warrant this repair, I would reject it out of hand and insist that they take it to a repairer of my choice, who will then re-do the repair to an acceptable standard.
Be aware that from a Ducati perspective, under their current warranties, they will do all that they can to classify this as 'aesthetic', in that it fits with their warranty wording of issues not-covered.
Assuming that you have got the 4 year version included with your bike, insist that this element of the warranty being 're-started', so that you maintain the full period of cover.
Also looking more closely at your photo sequence, it is really obvious that the original paint work has rust underneath, suggesting quite strongly that it was applied incorrectly from factory. This to me would indicate that there is likely to be a wider quality issue regarding the paintwork application. Ask for the bike paintwork to be examined by a properly qualified expert, who will be able to confirm quality one way or another.
To me anyway, you have a potential longer term problem here to deal with in the future, but then again, I clearly could be wrong, however,...........:eyes:

  15. I will ask some questions tomorrow when i hope to collect/inspect it.
I am still within 30 days so legally can reject the bike if needed. The fault was there from day 1 etc.
Not that i want to at present as love the bike and can not get a replacement.
Whole thing has p***** me right off.

  16. What colour should it be underneath?

  17. This is what the frame looked like with the paint peeled back

  18. I think looking at that photo, the frame protector is just proud of the frame, I also think as the slider has been fitted, its come into contact with already blistered paint inside where the frame protector goes in, thus lifting it!!

  19. This was after spacers had been added to keep it away from the frame.

  20. When I get mine back will take pictures and post!!
